Leather Accords: From Birch Tar to Modern Suede

There is no leather in leather fragrance. A leather note is an accord, built historically from birch tar, isobutyl quinoline, styrax and castoreum, and now more often from modern synthetics that give suede rather than tannery. Both birch tar and styrax are regulated by IFRA, which is much of why leather smells different now.

Leather is the most interesting accord in perfumery precisely because it has no natural source and never did. Everything you have ever smelled and called leather was somebody’s invention.

Where did the leather note come from?

From actual leather, indirectly. Russian leather — cuir de Russie — was traditionally treated with birch tar, which waterproofed it and gave it a distinctive smoky, tarry, slightly medicinal smell. Perfumers reproducing the smell of expensive luggage and gloves reached for the same material that made the smell in the first place.

Birch tar is produced by pyrolysis: destructive heating of birch bark and wood in the absence of air. The IFRA Standard names the material “birch wood pyrolysate” and lists six CAS numbers for its various forms. It smells of smoke, tar, creosote, burnt wood and a distant note of medicine — nothing like a finished leather jacket, and everything like the process that made one.

The second foundation of the accord arrived in 1908. A peer-reviewed history of industrial fragrance chemistry records “isobutyl quinoline or ‘IBQ’ 7 (Darzens, 1908), with a unique smell that evokes leather.” IBQ is bitter, green, earthy, inky and dry — closer to the inside of a cheap wallet, or to printer’s ink, than to smoke. It is also brutally powerful.

What did Bandit do?

Bandit, launched by Robert Piguet in 1944, is the composition that made leather a serious perfumery family rather than an imitation of luggage.

Germaine Cellier composed it. She was a chemist who worked for Roure Bertrand, and Bandit is described as “one of the first leather chypres in perfumery.” A specific dosage figure for its isobutyl quinoline circulates very widely and we have cut it from this article: the only source we could find for it is an encyclopedia entry that gives no citation at all, and nothing in the trade or supplier literature corroborates it. What can be said without a number is that IBQ is an exceptionally powerful material, that Cellier’s method was to push single materials past the level at which they read as notes, and that Bandit is still shocking eighty years on.

Cellier’s other work tells you what kind of perfumer she was: Vent Vert for Balmain in 1947, and Fracas in 1948, “considered today to be the landmark tuberose fragrance,” whose formula contained “Indian tuberose absolute, Tunisian orange blossom absolute, French jasmine, and Italian iris root butter.” She also composed Jolie Madame in 1953 and Monsieur Balmain in 1964. She built her reputation on overdosing single materials until they stopped being notes and became statements.

The important structural point: none of these smells like leather on its own. Leather is what happens when you put smoke next to something inky next to something animalic next to something dry, and let a nose that knows what leather smells like do the rest of the work.

What did IFRA actually do to birch tar?

This is worth getting exactly right, because the internet version is either “birch tar is banned” or “IFRA ruined leather,” and neither is accurate.

The IFRA Standard on birch wood pyrolysate, from Amendment 47 in 2013, is a prohibition with a specification. The prohibition is specific: “Crude birch wood (bark) pyrolysates (oils) derived by pyrolysis … should not be used as a fragrance ingredient for any finished product application.”

Rectified oils remain usable, subject to a specification. Benzopyrene and 1,2-benzanthracene are used as markers for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and “the total concentration of both of the markers should not exceed 1 ppb in the final product.” The stated basis is “carcinogenicity, genotoxicity by release of polynuclear hydrocarbons (PAH).” Implementation was 10 August 2013 for new formulas and 10 August 2014 for existing ones.

So: crude birch tar is out, rectified birch tar is in at PAH levels below one part per billion in the finished product. That is a real constraint and it does change what a perfumer can do, but it is not a ban on the material class. The same pattern applies to styrax under Amendment 49 of 2020, where crude gums are prohibited, only distillates from exudations are permitted, and category limits run from 0.034% in Category 2 up to 4.5% in Categories 10A and 10B, with Category 12 unrestricted. The stated basis there is dermal sensitization.

And a correction worth making, because it circulates constantly: isobutyl quinoline is not IFRA-restricted. It does not appear in the index of IFRA Standards up to and including the 51st Amendment, the index document itself dated 30 June 2023. Quinoline itself is prohibited, under a standard dated 2010, but isobutyl quinoline is a different substance and is absent from the index. The 51st is still the amendment in force: IFRA published an end-of-consultation letter for a 52nd Amendment on 31 August 2026 and expects to notify it in January 2027, with 48 new restriction standards proposed, so none of the negative findings in this article should be relied on for compliance without checking the live Standards Library. A supplier’s own IFRA conformity statement for isobutyl quinoline — issued by Vigon International and dated 25 October 2024 — states that the product “is not restricted as such according to the Standards of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA)” and “bears no IFRA specifications.” Note that this statement references standards only up to the 50th Amendment, so it is one amendment behind the index.

Why does modern leather smell like suede instead of a tannery?

Three reasons, and only one of them is regulation.

Regulation, partly. Crude birch tar and crude styrax are out. Castoreum as an animal product has, on our own observation of what suppliers and brands now offer, essentially left commercial perfumery — we are not aware of a regulatory prohibition on it and do not claim one. The harshest tools in the historical kit are either unavailable or tightly specified.

Better synthetics, mostly. Materials like Givaudan’s Safraleine give a leather effect that is warm, spicy and comfortable rather than tarry. Safraleine is a genuinely interesting material because it does two jobs at once: Givaudan describes it as offering saffron-like spice with “rose ketone-like floral aspects” alongside its “leathery and tobacco facets.” A perfumer building a leather with Safraleine gets warmth and spice for free. A perfumer building one with birch tar and IBQ gets smoke and bitterness.

Taste, above all. The market wants comfortable. Bandit in 1944 was a deliberately confrontational fragrance made for a deliberately confrontational moment. A 2026 mass-market leather is briefed to be attractive to as many people as possible, and tarry bitterness is not a mass-market proposition. What are the different kinds of leather note?

Five, roughly, and knowing which one a fragrance is doing tells you far more than the word “leather” on a note list.

  • Tar leather. Birch tar forward. Smoky, phenolic, campfire-and-creosote. The oldest style and the most divisive.
  • Chypre leather. Leather over a mossy, bitter, green-earthy chypre structure. Bandit’s family. Largely gone from the mainstream, partly because of oakmoss restrictions.
  • Suede. Soft, dry, powdery, slightly sweet. Modern, comfortable, and the dominant commercial style.
  • Saffron leather. Safraleine or saffron materials leading. Warm, spicy, faintly metallic. The default in niche perfumery for the last fifteen years.
  • Fruity leather. Bright fruit against a raw leather base, which is a deliberate clash rather than a blend. Tom Ford Tuscan Leather is the reference.

Which leathers should you smell?

  1. Tom Ford Tuscan Leather — raspberry over a raw, almost metallic suede. The most influential leather of the last twenty years and still divisive.
  2. Tom Ford Ombre Leather — the accessible version: suede, cardamom and a dry floral. A good demonstration of the modern comfortable leather.
  3. Dior Fahrenheit Eau de Toilette — violet leaf and a petrol-adjacent accord over leather and woods. One of the strangest things ever sold at department-store scale.
  4. Guerlain Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette — leather under the Guerlain vanilla-tonka signature. The most elegant leather in mainstream perfumery.
  5. Robert Piguet Bandit — Germaine Cellier’s 1944 composition, still in production and still shocking. Be warned that the current formula is not the 1944 one.

What happened to the leather chypre?

It mostly left the mainstream, and the reasons are a useful case study in how a whole fragrance family can disappear without anyone deciding to kill it.

A leather chypre is a leather note over a chypre base: bergamot at the top, a mossy and bitter-green heart, oakmoss and labdanum underneath. Bandit is the archetype. Two things happened to it.

Oakmoss became restricted. IFRA’s oakmoss standard is a restriction with a specification, and the category limits are low. A chypre built on oakmoss at historical levels cannot be made to the same formula. This is the most-cited example of regulation reshaping a family, and it is a fair one — though what the standard actually does is cap the material and require limits on specific sensitizers within it rather than prohibit it outright. What IFRA and the EU have actually restricted goes through the detail.

Taste moved. Bitter, mossy, green and dry went out of fashion in the 1990s and has not come back at mass scale. The customer who would have bought a leather chypre in 1970 buys something entirely different now.

How do you wear a leather fragrance without overdoing it?

Leather accords are among the most demanding things in a catalogue to wear well, for a specific technical reason: the materials involved sit low in the volatility range, project further than you expect, and cling to fabric far longer than to skin.

  • Spray fewer times than the label suggests, and lower on the body. A leather at chest height is in everyone else’s nose. On a wrist or at the base of the neck it stays yours.
  • Do not spray leather on clothing you value. Birch-tar-forward and tar-adjacent materials can persist in wool and cotton through several washes. This is not a fault; it is what those materials do.
  • Give it forty minutes before judging. Most leathers open at their most aggressive and settle considerably. The opening is the least representative part.
  • Cold weather is the friend of leather. Low temperature slows volatility, which is exactly what a dense smoky accord needs. The same fragrance in August can be genuinely unpleasant.

What sillage, projection and longevity each mean separates the three things people conflate when they say a leather is “too strong”, and it is usually projection rather than longevity that is the problem.

Is saffron the new leather?

In niche perfumery, effectively yes, and it is worth understanding why the two overlap.

Saffron’s own aromatic character is not what people expect from a cooking spice. It reads leathery, hay-like, faintly metallic and slightly bitter — much closer to the inky-dry side of a leather accord than to anything sweet. That is why saffron and leather pair so naturally, and why a saffron-forward material can do a leather’s job on its own.

Givaudan’s Safraleine is the clearest commercial expression of this. The company’s own description puts the two together explicitly: “warm, powerful, leathery and tobacco facets” alongside “characteristics of spices reminiscent of natural saffron.” A perfumer reaching for it is buying leather and spice in one decision, at a use level Givaudan gives as 0.1% to 3%.

The commercial consequence is a very large number of niche fragrances that read as warm, spicy, faintly leathery and broadly similar to each other. That convergence is real and it has the same underlying cause as the convergence in the fresh masculine market: a material that solves a brief well gets used by everyone. Why so many masculines smell alike is the other half of that story.

Myths worth correcting

“Leather fragrance contains leather.” There is no commercial perfumery raw material extracted from tanned hide — no leather absolute, oil or extract in any supplier catalogue — so the note is always built from other materials. What a leather jacket smells of is largely the tanning agents and finishes applied to it, which is precisely why the original accord reached for birch tar, the material used to treat Russian leather in the first place.

“IFRA banned birch tar.” IFRA prohibited crude birch wood pyrolysates in 2013 and permitted rectified oils subject to a PAH specification of 1 ppb for two markers in the finished product. That is a restriction, not a ban on the material.

“IFRA banned isobutyl quinoline.” It is not in the index of IFRA Standards through the 51st Amendment, and a supplier conformity statement says it bears no IFRA specifications. Quinoline, a different substance, is prohibited.

“Castoreum comes from beaver glands, so avoid leather fragrances.” Castoreum has, as far as we can see from what is actually offered and used, been replaced in commercial perfumery by synthetic reconstructions and bases. That is a trade observation rather than a sourced statistic, and it is not a claim that castoreum is banned. A modern leather is very unlikely to contain any.

“Modern leathers are weak because of regulation.” They are soft because the market wants soft, and because modern captives like Safraleine give a warm leather effect more easily than birch tar does. Regulation is a contributing factor, not the main one.

The honest limits of this article

The regulatory material is the strongest here, read directly from the IFRA Standards themselves. The birch wood pyrolysate standard (Amendment 47, 2013), including the prohibition wording, the 1 ppb PAH marker specification, the carcinogenicity and genotoxicity basis and the August 2013 and August 2014 implementation dates, comes from IFRA’s own PDF. So does the styrax standard (Amendment 49, 2020), including the prohibition of crude gums and the category range of 0.034% to 4.5%. The absence of isobutyl quinoline, vanillin and ambroxide from the 51st Amendment index is a negative finding from IFRA’s own index; absence from an index is weaker evidence than a positive entry, and anyone with a compliance need should check the live Standards Library.

Isobutyl quinoline’s attribution to Darzens in 1908 comes from a peer-reviewed review of industrial fragrance chemistry. Note that batch one of this journal cut a separate Darzens 1903 claim about aldehyde stabilization for lack of corroboration; this is a different claim from a better source, but the coincidence is worth flagging to a checker.

Germaine Cellier’s material — Roure Bertrand as her employer, Bandit in 1944 as one of the first leather chypres, Vent Vert 1947, Fracas 1948 and its named absolutes, Jolie Madame 1953 and Monsieur Balmain 1964 — all rests on her encyclopedia entry, and each quoted phrase has been checked verbatim against it. The widely repeated dosage figure for Bandit’s isobutyl quinoline has been cut from this article: on re-checking, that entry carries no citation for it whatsoever, and no supplier, trade or archival source corroborates it. It should not be put back.

Safraleine’s odor description, chemical name (2,3,3-trimethylindan-1-one), CAS number and the 0.1% to 3% use level come from Givaudan’s own product page, which is the right source for a supplier’s own material. Cade oil’s standard has now been read in full from IFRA’s own CDN rather than a third-party copy: Amendment 47 (2013), CAS 8013-10-3 and 90046-02-9, a prohibition with specification, crude cade oil derived by pyrolysis prohibited for any finished product application, only rectified oils complying with the PAH limitations permitted, the same 1 ppb total for benzopyrene and 1,2-benzanthracene in the final product, the same carcinogenicity and genotoxicity basis, and implementation dates of 10 August 2013 and 10 August 2014.

No claim is made about what materials any named fragrance contains. Bandit, Tuscan Leather, Fahrenheit and Habit Rouge are recommended as illustrations of styles, and the article notes that the current Bandit is not the 1944 formula. What our own catalogue shows

We cannot tell you how many of the fragrances we sell carry leather, suede, birch or castoreum, for the same reason this whole subject is slippery. A listing has no note field. Only about 61 of our roughly 3,950 listings publish a full top-heart-base pyramid, and about 71% never use the word “note” at all, so a count would measure copywriting rather than composition.

It would also measure the wrong thing even if the copy were complete. Leather is an accord, not a material. The ten materials our listings mention most often are bergamot, rose, musk, amber, jasmine, vanilla, lavender, sandalwood, mandarin and lemon, and not one of them is a leather material. Birch tar, styrax, isobutyl quinoline and Safraleine are what build the smell, and none of those is a word product copy uses. The tannery gets assembled out of things that are not leather, which is this article in one sentence.

Does leather perfume still contain castoreum?

Almost certainly not. Castoreum, an animal secretion, has been overwhelmingly replaced in commercial perfumery by synthetic reconstructions and bases that deliver the same animalic-smoky-leathery effect. A modern leather fragrance is very unlikely to contain any.
