A chypre is a fragrance built on bright bergamot over a base of labdanum, oakmoss and patchouli, usually with a floral heart between them. Coty’s own account credits the family to Chypre de Coty in 1917. Regulation has changed both ends of the structure, and the family survived by rebuilding its base.
The chypre is the family people mean when they say perfume used to be better. It is also the family where the “regulation ruined everything” story is closest to being true, and still gets the details wrong in almost every retelling. What follows is what a chypre actually is, what specifically was restricted and by whom, what replaced it, and how to recognise one now. Pronounced roughly SHEEP-ruh.
What is a chypre, structurally?
Four elements, and the tension between the first and the last is the whole idea.
- Bergamot at the top: sharp, bitter-bright citrus, more complex and less sweet than lemon or orange.
- A floral heart, historically rose and jasmine, sometimes with a fruit.
- Labdanum in the base: a sticky, resinous, leathery-sweet extract from the rockrose.
- Moss and patchouli underneath: damp, bitter, earthy, faintly bark-like.
Put together, a classical chypre reads as bitter and bright at once — cool citrus arriving over damp earth, with flowers holding the two apart. It is a structure with an argument in it, which is why people find chypres either the most sophisticated thing in perfumery or actively unpleasant. There is not much middle ground.
As with every family name, no standards body defines a chypre. It is a trade convention. Our catalogue has no fragrance-family field, and where family words turn up in listing copy they are adjectives in a sales sentence rather than a classification. Do not shop by the word.
Where did the chypre come from?
Coty’s own heritage page makes the claim directly. Writing about the chypre family, it says “it would arguably never have existed without its landmark fragrance, Chypre de Coty, launched in 1917.” The same page describes François Coty as “widely recognised as one of the pioneers of modern perfumery,” dates La Rose Jacqueminot to 1904 and notes that it combined Centifolia rose with the alpha-ionone molecule, records that “In 1907, he became the first perfumer to open a boutique on Place Vendôme,” and that “In 1912, Coty opened its first branches in London, New York and Moscow.”
Note the hedge in Coty’s own sentence: “arguably.” A house claiming to have founded a fragrance family is an interested party, and the 1917 date rests on the brand’s own record rather than on independent documentation we were able to find. We are citing it because Coty is the only party with standing to make the claim, not because it settles the matter.
The name refers to Cyprus, and the usual explanation is that the accord evokes Mediterranean hillside materials — labdanum from rockrose, moss, citrus. We could not source that etymological story to a primary document and are therefore reporting it as the received account rather than as fact.
What actually happened to the chypre family?
Two separate things, at opposite ends of the structure, and conflating them is how the story goes wrong.
The base: two constituents of oakmoss were prohibited as substances
Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 of 2 August 2017 amended the annexes to the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Its recitals state that “atranol and chloroatranol are natural components of oak tree moss (Evernia prunastri) and treemoss (Evernia furfuracea) extracts,” and it acted on a Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety opinion of 26 to 27 June 2012, reference SCCS/1459/11. The regulation added three substances to Annex II, the EU list of substances prohibited in cosmetic products: hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde, the muguet material sold as Lyral, at entry 1380, and the two oakmoss constituents that concern us here:

Cosmetic products containing them could not be placed on the Union market from 23 August 2019, and could not be made available on the Union market from 23 August 2021.
Read what that does and does not say. Oakmoss extract was not prohibited. Two compounds that occur naturally inside it were. Separately, IFRA’s Standard for oakmoss extracts is a restriction with a specification rather than a prohibition, requiring purification as well as capping the use level. The accurate summary is the one that article reaches: oakmoss was not banned, it was capped and cleaned. Purified low-atranol oakmoss is a commercial material. It does not smell the same as the unpurified extract, which is exactly why classical chypres changed.
The top: citrus oils were constrained too
This half of the story is almost never told, and it matters because bergamot is not a supporting player in a chypre — it is the whole opening.
Expressed citrus oils naturally contain furocoumarins. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Products, in opinion SCCP/0942/05 adopted on 13 December 2005, stated that “total concentrations of furocoumarins exceeding 1 ppm in any finished cosmetic product will be of concern with regard to consumer safety,” listed bergamot oil among essential oils that may be used provided total furocoumarins stay below that level, and stated that “cold-pressed citrus oils generally contain a high amount of total furocoumarins and would have to be distilled prior to their use in cosmetic products to fall below the permitted level of 1 ppm.”
One part per million is a very low ceiling for a material naturally rich in these compounds. The industry’s answer was furocoumarin-free bergamot, produced by additional processing. It is a real and widely used material, and it does not smell identical to the cold-pressed oil it replaced. So the chypre lost some character at the top at the same time as it lost some at the bottom, and the two are frequently attributed to a single cause.
Did the chypre die?
No. It changed base and carried on, and the way it changed tells you something about how perfumery actually works.

Fractionated and cleaned-up patchouli is the single most consequential substitution in that table. It is the reason a great many modern fragrances that nobody markets as chypres are structurally chypre-adjacent: there is a large family of dark, earthy, patchouli-led compositions that took over the job the old base used to do. Synthetic materials sold as moss substitutes exist too and are used at scale. We are not naming a specific one with a date or an inventor, because the only sources we could find for those details are supplier catalogues and forum posts, and that is not good enough for a claim about who made what.
How do you recognise a chypre now?
Not from a listing, and our own catalogue shows why. Only 61 of our 3,956 listings publish a full top, heart and base pyramid — about 1.5 percent — and 2,814 carry no note text at all. There is no family field, no launch-year field and no perfumer field in the data. Even the note words do not help much: of the 1,142 listings that mention materials, oakmoss appears in 43, while bergamot appears in 334 — tied with rose as the most-mentioned material in the whole catalogue. Bergamot is in everything; oakmoss is in almost nothing, at least as far as sales copy goes.
So do it on skin. Three checks, in order:
- Is the opening bitter-bright rather than sweet-bright? A chypre opens on bergamot, which has a bitter edge. If the citrus is sweet and juicy, you are probably somewhere else.
- At twenty to forty minutes, what is arriving underneath? If it reads as damp earth, bark or wet forest floor, that is the chypre base. If it reads as hay and almond, you are in a fougère instead — Our fougère guide sets out that family.
- Does the whole thing stay slightly astringent? A chypre does not resolve into comfort. If it turns soft and creamy after an hour, it has probably gone somewhere else.

Why do people say chypres are gone?
Three reasons, only one of which is regulation.
The base genuinely changed. Purified oakmoss at lower levels does not do what the unpurified extract at historical levels did. Anyone who wore a classical chypre in 1985 and smells the current version is not imagining the difference. What a flanker actually is covers how to think about versions of one fragrance.
Taste moved. The mass market went sweet, and it did so decisively. A bitter, earthy, astringent structure is a hard sell in a category where the growth has been in sweetness. That is a commercial fact, not a regulatory one, and it probably did more damage to the family than any annex entry.
The word stopped being used. Brands market fruity, floral, woody and fresh. Very few market chypre, because the word means nothing to most buyers. The structures survive under other labels.
Myths worth correcting
“The EU banned oakmoss.” It did not. Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 prohibited two constituents — atranol at Annex II entry 1381 and chloroatranol at entry 1382 — not the extract. Purified oakmoss remains a commercial material.
“IFRA banned oakmoss.” Also no, and IFRA is not a regulator. Its Standard for oakmoss is a restriction with a specification. The reformulation story has the figures and explains what IFRA is.
“Only the base was regulated.” The top was constrained too. The SCCP’s 2005 opinion set out a 1 ppm concern threshold for total furocoumarins in a finished cosmetic product, which is why furocoumarin-free bergamot exists.
“Vintage bottles are the only real chypres.” A forty-year-old bottle has also been sitting in air and light for forty years, and what you are smelling is not what it smelled like when new. How long a bottle actually lasts and how to store a bottle properly explain what happens to a stored bottle.
“A chypre is a women’s fragrance.” The structure has no gender. It has been marketed mostly to women and used at the same time in masculine leathers and aromatics, which is a fact about marketing departments rather than about structure.
“Patchouli in a modern fragrance means it is a chypre.” Patchouli is now everywhere, holding up sweet gourmands as well as earthy structures. It is a strong hint, not a diagnosis.
The honest limits of this article
The 1917 date and the claim that the family would not exist without Chypre de Coty come from Coty’s own heritage page, which hedges its own claim with “arguably.” We found no independent primary documentation of the launch date. The Cyprus etymology is the received account and is labelled as such; we could not source it.
The regulatory material is the strongest part and was read from the instruments themselves. Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 of 2 August 2017, its recitals on atranol and chloroatranol as natural components of oak tree moss and treemoss extracts, the SCCS opinion reference SCCS/1459/11 of 26 to 27 June 2012, the Annex II entry numbers 1380 for HICC, 1381 for atranol and 1382 for chloroatranol, and the two compliance dates of 23 August 2019 and 23 August 2021 all come from the regulation’s own text, re-read at fact-check. Numbering three additions rather than two is what makes the two numbers this article relies on checkable. The furocoumarin material comes from SCCP opinion SCCP/0942/05, adopted 13 December 2005, quoted as written. Note that the 1 ppm figure is expressed by that committee as a level that “will be of concern” rather than as a hard legal limit, and the article uses the committee’s own wording for that reason.

No perfumer is named in this article at all, including for Chypre de Coty. François Coty is described as a founder and as a pioneer of modern perfumery, which is Coty’s own characterisation of him, and no composition is attributed to any individual. We could not corroborate any perfumer attribution to a brand statement, an award citation or named trade reporting.
The substitution table is our reading of what the trade did, informed by handling the materials and the finished fragrances, not a set of sourced facts about specific reformulations. No house publishes reformulation notes. No formula percentage appears for any named fragrance, because formulas are trade secrets. Every smell description is our characterisation. And nothing here is a health or safety statement: the regulatory facts are reported as regulatory facts, and we make no claim about whether any material is safe or unsafe to wear.
What our own catalogue shows
We would like to tell you how many of the fragrances we sell are described as chypres, and we cannot. There is no family field on a product listing, and no count of the word “chypre” in description copy exists in our data. The material counts we do hold cover bergamot, which is in everything, and oakmoss, which is in 43 listings — both already quoted above. Patchouli and labdanum are not in the counted vocabulary at all, so the two lower corners of the structure this article is about are simply dark to us.
A count of listings mentioning both bergamot and patchouli — the nearest available proxy for a chypre-adjacent structure — cannot be produced either, because co-occurrence across the note vocabulary was never computed. It would be a weak proxy even if it existed. With 61 listings publishing a full pyramid and 2,814 carrying no note text at all, a co-occurrence count would measure which copywriters like naming materials rather than which fragrances are built this way.
Which leaves the recognition test earlier in this article doing the work, on your own wrist, which is where a structural judgement belongs anyway. A chypre is a shape, and no retailer’s data records shapes.
