Iso E Super is IFF’s trade name for a woody-amber material now used across modern masculine perfumery. The regulated substance is OTNE, and IFRA permits up to 20 percent of it in a fine fragrance. Its own patent described it as an amber odorant, not a woody one, which is the key to how it works.
If you have ever smelled two expensive woody masculines back to back and been unable to say what the difference was, this material is a large part of the reason. An Australian government evaluation calls it “a high production volume chemical internationally” that is “commonly found in fine perfumes, personal care and household products”, with “a global use volume in the thousands of tonnes per year”; almost nobody outside the trade can name it, and the first thing to understand about it is that its inventors did not think they had made a woody material at all.
What is Iso E Super?
Two names for nearly the same thing, and keeping them apart saves a lot of confusion.
Iso E Super is a trade name belonging to International Flavors & Fragrances. OTNE — 1-(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-2,3,8,8-tetramethyl-2-naphthalenyl)ethanone, CAS 54464-57-2 — is the chemical designation that appears in regulatory documents. When you read about restrictions, they are written against OTNE. When you read a perfumer talking, they say Iso E Super. Similar materials are sold by other suppliers under other trade names.
The material is not a single compound. It is a mixture of closely related isomers, and the one doing most of the olfactory work is a minority component of the commercial product. This article is about what the material did to the fragrance market rather than about how it was made.
Its own patent called it an amber, not a wood
Here is the part of the story that reframes everything.
US Patent 3,929,677, assigned to International Flavors and Fragrances Inc., naming John B. Hall and James Milton Sanders as inventors, filed 3 December 1974 and issued 30 December 1975, is titled “Perfume compositions and perfume articles containing one isomer of an octahydrotetramethyl acetonaphthone.” It claims priority through earlier applications back to February 1973.
Read how the patent describes the smell. The phrases it uses, verbatim, are “amber and fruity amber fragrance ingredients,” “intense and persistent natural amber or fruity amber fragrance notes,” “intense and persistent unique amber and fruity-amber odors,” “persistent fruity amber and amber odors” and “characteristic intense fruity-amber note.” The document positions the material as a synthetic answer to the need for amber notes that are persistent and do not discolour with age.
The word “woody” does appear, but almost always attached to amber rather than standing alone: “strong woody amber character,” “amber aroma leaning towards a woody amber note.” The dominant descriptor, over and over, is amber.
Today every trade description, every perfumer interview and every enthusiast forum calls Iso E Super a woody material — dry cedar, velvety, transparent. That is not wrong as a characterisation of how it reads in a finished fragrance. But it is worth noticing that the industry’s most-used “woody” material was patented as an amber, and that a closely related patent from a different company a few years earlier — Givaudan’s GB 1,377,803, “Acetylated octahydronaphthalene odorant,” with a priority date of 18 January 1971 — describes its compounds this way: “Products of the invention are of value in perfume compositions in which they resemble ambergris.”
Two companies working on the same chemical family, both reaching for amber and ambergris rather than cedar. A regulator reached the same reading half a century later: the Australian evaluation describes OTNE as “developed as a synthetic amber fragrance, with a woody, floral scent reminiscent of ambergris.” This matters practically, not just historically: it explains why Iso E Super sits so comfortably under the modern amber-woody masculine, and why a category the trade calls “woody” so often reads as warm and skin-like rather than as timber. How much of it can a fragrance contain?
An extraordinary amount, and this is the single most concrete published figure in the subject.
The IFRA Standard for OTNE, read directly, is dated 2020 and identified as Amendment 49. It carries the heading “RECOMMENDATION: RESTRICTION” and sets maximum acceptable concentrations by product category. For Category 4 — fine fragrance — the limit is 20 percent of the finished product. Every other skin-contact category is far tighter; Category 12, which covers non-skin-contact products, carries no restriction at all. That 20 percent figure does not rest on our reading alone. An evaluation statement published by the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme on 14 January 2022 states independently that “IFRA has restricted the use of the OTNE technical mixture in finished products to concentrations of 0.0093%–20% depending on the product category” — the same two endpoints. OTNE also appears as a Restriction in the Standards index published with the 51st Amendment, which IFRA notified on 30 June 2023 and which is currently in force.
Twenty percent of a finished fine fragrance is a very large allowance. For comparison, the IFRA fine-fragrance ceiling for coumarin — the material that defines the entire fougère family — is 1.5 percent. That does not mean any fragrance uses 20 percent OTNE; nobody publishes what any fragrance contains, and formulas are trade secrets. What it tells you is that the regulatory ceiling is nowhere near the constraint on how much of this material a perfumer can use. The same Australian evaluation cites a Research Institute for Fragrance Materials survey finding that “OTNE is used in fine fragrances in a concentration of 4.5% in the final formulation (95th percentile)” — a figure about the category as a whole in 2022, not about any bottle, and roughly a quarter of the ceiling. Whatever limits Iso E Super’s dose in a given bottle, it is cost, taste and structure rather than regulation.
One caution about IFRA generally: it is the fragrance industry’s own self-regulatory programme and not a law, as the reformulation story explains. A limit being generous is a fact about the Standard, not a claim about safety, and we are making no safety claim either way.
Why did this material take over the woody masculine?
Four properties, in roughly descending order of commercial importance.
- It is neutral. This is the crucial one. Most materials impose a character; this one mostly adds volume and a dry backbone. A perfumer can add a great deal of it without the fragrance becoming “about” it. Very few materials can be used at scale without taking over.
- It is persistent. The patent’s own repeated word. It holds a composition together for hours, which solves the single biggest weakness of fresh and citrus-led fragrances — that they disappear.
- It is smooth. Real cedar and vetiver materials are rougher, more resinous and more variable. A synthetic woody-amber gives a clean, even, reproducible effect batch after batch, which matters enormously when you are filling a million bottles.
- It is not restricted in any way that bites. Twenty percent in fine fragrance is not a constraint. Compare the story of oakmoss in our chypre guide, where regulation genuinely reshaped a family.
Put those together and you have the ideal industrial material: cheap volume, long life, no personality and no regulatory friction. It is the plywood of modern perfumery, and we mean that as a description rather than an insult — plywood built the modern house.
What does the genre actually smell like?
The modern woody masculine — sometimes called woody-amber, sometimes mineral-woody — has a recognisable shape. Our characterisation, from handling a great many of them:
- A short bright opening, usually citrus, often grapefruit or bergamot.
- A dry, slightly peppery or mineral transition that arrives fast.
- A long, even, warm-dry woody-amber body that barely moves for hours.
- Very little floral content, very little sweetness, and no obvious drydown event.
Terre d’Hermès Eau de Toilette is a useful case, because Hermès’s own description of it says out loud how houses frame this register. Hermès calls it “A mineral, woody fragrance,” says it “combines the strength of cedar and the radiance of grapefruit with a vibrant touch of flint,” lists “Main raw materials: Grapefruit, Cedar, Flint,” and gives the “Olfactory emotion” as “Spicy, Dry.” The house also states on its own page that “In 2006, Jean-Claude Ellena created Terre d’Hermès,” and that since 2016 Christine Nagel has been exploring her own vision of the line.
To be completely clear: we are not saying Terre d’Hermès contains Iso E Super. Hermès does not disclose its formula, nobody outside the house knows it, and we have not tested anything. What that quotation establishes is the vocabulary — cedar, mineral, dry, flint — that this whole register is marketed in, from a house that names its own materials more often than most. Across our catalogue, Hermès names a perfumer in 16 of its 58 listings, the highest proportion of any large brand we carry, against 8.2 percent of listings catalogue-wide.
Why is the woody register so homogeneous?
The broader question – why so many fresh masculines smell alike – is one we have already answered at length, and where the blue accord came from is where that argument lives. What follows is the narrower version, applied to the woody register specifically:
- The palette is shared. Every house buys from the same handful of suppliers. The same woody-amber materials are available to a French luxury house and to a forty-dollar Dubai brand.
- The brief is the same. A brand commissioning a woody masculine wants something dry, clean, long-lasting, broadly likeable and safe in an office. Ten perfumers given that brief will converge.
- Neutral materials converge by design. A material chosen precisely because it does not impose a character will not differentiate one fragrance from another. The thing that makes Iso E Super useful is the thing that makes the genre homogeneous.
- Longevity is the most-demanded property. A base-heavy woody-amber structure is the reliable way to deliver it, so everything drifts toward the same base.
The honest conclusion is not that perfumers are lazy. It is that a material with no personality, no restriction that bites and excellent performance is going to end up in everything, and that the differences between good examples of the genre are real but small. If you want to hear them, the method matters more than the marketing: see testing on skin over several hours.
Can some people not smell it?
Reduced sensitivity to individual aroma materials is real, well documented for several material classes, and genetically based. We have set out the evidence — including the specific receptor variants and the measured differences in perceived intensity — in why it smells different on you, and we are not going to restate the figures here or extend them to a material the research we cited did not test.
What we will say, as a retail observation, is that this genre produces more “I cannot smell anything after twenty minutes” complaints than any other, and that most of those complaints are about adaptation rather than about performance. A dry, even, unchanging base is exactly the kind of thing your own nose stops registering while everyone around you continues to notice it. Before concluding that a woody fragrance has vanished, leave the room for twenty minutes and come back to your sleeve, or ask someone.
Myths worth correcting
“Iso E Super is a cedarwood synthetic.” It is not a reproduction of cedar. Its own patent describes it as an amber and fruity-amber material, and a parallel patent from another company describes the same chemical family as resembling ambergris.
“It is cheap filler.” It is inexpensive, and it is also the material that solved longevity for an entire category. Materials get used at scale because they work, not because they pad. What naturals and synthetics each actually do addresses the filler myth directly.
“IFRA restrictions are why woody fragrances all smell the same.” The opposite. The fine-fragrance ceiling for OTNE is 20 percent, which constrains nothing. The convergence is commercial, not regulatory.
“A fragrance that lists cedar contains cedarwood oil.” A note list is marketing copy, not a formula. “Cedar” on a box may mean cedar oil, a cedar-adjacent synthetic, a woody-amber material, or a blend. Our guide to fragrance notes explains what a note list is actually describing.
“You can buy the material on its own to smell it.” Fragrances marketed as a single molecule in alcohol do exist and are a real way to learn what a material does. We do not carry them, so this is general information rather than a recommendation.
“Expensive woody fragrances use less of it.” Nobody knows. No house publishes usage levels for any material in any fragrance, and anyone giving you a percentage for a named bottle is guessing.
The honest limits of this article
The patent material is the strongest part and was read from the patent documents themselves. US 3,929,677 gives its assignee, its two named inventors, its filing and issue dates and its odour language, all quoted above verbatim. GB 1,377,803 gives Givaudan as applicant, a priority date of 18 January 1971 and the ambergris quotation. Both are primary documents.
But a caution a fact-checker should hold onto: US 3,929,677 covers one isomer of an octahydrotetramethyl acetonaphthone, and Iso E Super as sold is an isomer mixture. The patent is therefore evidence about the chemical family that Iso E Super belongs to and about how IFF described that family’s smell in the mid-1970s. It is not a formulation document for the commercial material, and this article does not present it as one. The patent also references an earlier British patent and an earlier US patent as prior art in the same family.
The IFRA figures were read from the Standard document for OTNE, dated 2020 and identified as Amendment 49. That document is served from a supplier site rather than from IFRA, so at fact-check the 20 percent figure was checked a second way: OTNE’s presence as a Restriction was confirmed in the Standards index on IFRA’s own CDN, cover-dated 30 June 2023, and the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme’s evaluation statement of 14 January 2022 independently gives the Standard’s range across categories as 0.0093 to 20 percent. Two documents agreeing on both endpoints is the basis for the figure. A narrower single-category figure that appeared in an earlier draft has been cut, because it rested on the supplier copy alone. IFRA Standards are industry self-regulation rather than law, and the 51st Amendment is the one in force: IFRA’s own end-of-consultation notice for the 52nd, published 31 August 2026, records that its consultation closed on 12 June 2026 and that notification is expected in January 2027. We have deliberately not quoted the safety endpoints named in the Standard, because reporting a regulatory limit is a factual matter and interpreting a toxicological endpoint is not our job.

No fragrance in this article is claimed to contain Iso E Super or OTNE. That bears repeating because it is the most likely way this piece could be misread. Formulas are trade secrets. The Hermès quotations establish how a house describes the register, and the perfumer credits for Terre d’Hermès are Hermès’s own statement on its own product page — the only kind of perfumer attribution we will publish.
Every olfactory description of the genre is ours, from experience, and should be read as a characterisation. The comparison of the 20 percent OTNE ceiling with the 1.5 percent coumarin ceiling is a comparison of two IFRA Category 4 limits from the same amendment year, which is a fair comparison, but neither number tells you what is in any bottle.
What our own catalogue shows
Our own listings are close to useless for finding this register, and the reason is this article’s thesis rather than an excuse.
Of the materials our description copy names most often, exactly one is a wood: sandalwood, in 185 listings, eighth on the list behind bergamot and rose at 334 each, musk at 316, amber at 283, jasmine at 267, vanilla at 201 and lavender at 200. Cedar, cedarwood and vetiver are not in the counted vocabulary at all, and neither is the adjective “woody”. The words a reader would actually search to find a dry woody masculine are either missing from our data or missing from the copy.
A count of listings naming amber alongside a wood — the nearest proxy for the woody-amber register — cannot be produced either, because co-occurrence was never computed. It would measure the wrong thing in any case. Amber is the fourth most-mentioned material in our copy at 283 listings, and in that copy it almost never means ambergris and almost never means a single molecule. The material this article is about appears on no label under any name, which is precisely why the register converged without buyers ever being able to shop around it.
