    Why the Same Perfume Smells Different on Different People

    The same perfume smells different on different people for three reasons, in descending order of evidence. Your own body odor mixes with it. Your nose is genetically different from other people’s, so the same molecules register differently. And you adapt to a scent you are wearing within minutes. Skin chemistry altering the fragrance itself is the weakest popular explanation.

    Almost all writing on this subject asserts that skin pH transforms perfume. The research points somewhere more interesting and considerably better documented: a large share of the effect is not in the fragrance at all. It is in the perceiver.

    How much of the difference is your nose rather than your skin?

    More than most people expect, and this is the best-evidenced part of the entire topic. It is also the part almost never mentioned.

    Humans carry roughly 400 working olfactory receptor genes, and they vary substantially between individuals. In a study that sequenced the olfactory receptor subgenome across 418 receptor genes in 332 people who had also been tested on smell perception, the median participant carried about 34 non-functional receptors. Variation in a single receptor gene was frequently associated with how an odor was perceived, and those associations attached more often to perceived intensity than to pleasantness. Keep the denominator in view: that was seven of the eight significant associations the study found, a small base to generalise from.

    Four specific cases turn that general finding into something you can recognize in your own experience.

    Androstenone: the same molecule as unpleasant, faint, or nothing

    Keller and colleagues, publishing in Nature in 2007, tested 391 people on the steroid odorants androstenone and androstadienone. Variants of the receptor OR7D4 shifted detection thresholds elevenfold for androstenone and sixteenfold for androstadienone. Among people carrying one copy of the less sensitive variant, 46 percent could not detect the highest concentration tested at all, against 28 percent of those with two copies of the reference version.

    The quality judgment moved with it. Carriers of the less sensitive variant “rated both steroids as less unpleasant,” and the proportion calling androstadienone extremely unpleasant was under half that of the reference group. The authors concluded that “OR7D4 genotype in our population explained 19% and 39% of the variance in the valence and intensity ratings of the steroid odours, respectively.”

    One gene. Nineteen percent of the disagreement about whether something smells nice, and thirty-nine percent of the disagreement about how strong it is.

    Beta-ionone: floral to some people, sour to others

    This is the case that matters most to perfume, because beta-ionone is the violet and orris material used across an enormous number of fragrances. Jaeger, McRae and colleagues reported in Current Biology in 2013 that a single variant, rs6591536, encoding an N183D substitution in the second extracellular loop of the receptor OR5A1, is the causal variant for beta-ionone sensitivity and “explains >96% of the observed phenotypic variation, resembling a monogenic Mendelian trait.” On the perceptual side the paper’s own wording is that “sensitive individuals typically describe beta-ionone in foods and beverages as ‘fragrant’ and ‘floral,’ whereas less-sensitive individuals describe these stimuli differently.”

    The primary paper is Jaeger SR, McRae JF, Bava CM et al., “A Mendelian Trait for Olfactory Sensitivity Affects Odor Experience and Food Selection,” Current Biology 23(16):1601–1605, and the two quotations above are from its abstract. The full text remains unreachable. Two figures that circulate widely in write-ups of this study have therefore been left out of this article: a roughly hundredfold sensitivity difference between genotypes, and a description of the insensitive percept as sour or vinegar-like. Neither appears in the abstract and neither could be traced to a primary measurement. An educational resource published by the Association for Chemoreception Sciences describes about half of people getting a strong floral quality from beta-ionone while the rest get a faint sweet note or cannot smell it at all; that proportion is reported rather than verified.

    Musks: the material class you cannot escape

    Musks appear in the base of a very large share of modern fragrances, which makes variation in musk perception unusually consequential.

    Sato-Akuhara and colleagues, in Chemical Senses in 2023, examined the receptor OR5AN1 in 530 subjects. Participants homozygous for the L289F variant were more sensitive than those with the reference version. In their New York cohort, 12.83 percent were homozygous reference, 45.09 percent heterozygous and 38.68 percent homozygous for the variant. The more sensitive group rated ethylene brassylate, exaltolide and galaxolide as more intense, and in a separate Japanese cohort of 54 subjects the variant homozygotes had lower detection thresholds for muscone. Nitro musks such as musk ketone showed no such difference, so this is specific to particular musk structures rather than to musk as a category.

    A separate study in PLOS Genetics in 2022, covering 1,000 participants in a discovery cohort and 364 in a validation cohort, identified OR4D6 as a musk receptor and found that homozygotes for its M263T variant ranked galaxolide intensity lower than reference homozygotes by an average of 33.3 percent and 17.1 percent across the two cohorts. The same paper reports that “almost 25% of the population has a specific anosmia” to 3M2H, one of the principal components of human body odor.

    That last finding is worth pausing on. A quarter of people cannot smell one of the main molecules responsible for how human bodies smell. Some of the disagreement about whether a fragrance smells different on someone is disagreement about the background it is sitting on.

    The crucial counterweight: not everything is genetic

    The temptation at this point is to conclude that all odor perception is genetically determined. It is not, and the evidence against that is as good as the evidence for the cases above.

    Knaapila and colleagues, in Chemical Senses in 2012, had twin pairs and their siblings rate the intensity of six odorants, with 1,573 participants. They established heritability for androstenone at h² = 0.30 and for galaxolide at h² = 0.34, “but not for the other odorants,” which were amyl acetate, eugenol, mercaptans and rose.

    So genetics has a measurable grip on perception of some materials and no detectable grip on others. Rose smells like rose to more or less everybody. Musk and androstenone do not. Anyone who tells you that perfume perception is simply genetic is overgeneralizing from a handful of well-studied exceptions.

    What does skin actually do to a fragrance?

    Skin does two things that are well supported and one thing that is mostly folklore.

    It supplies a background odor that mixes in

    This is the strongest skin-side effect and the most underrated. Body odor is produced largely by skin bacteria acting on secretions, and it varies with diet, health, hormones, washing and clothing.

    Havlicek and Lenochova, in Chemical Senses in 2006, used a balanced within-subject design in which 17 male participants wore axillary pads through two separate two-week dietary periods, one including red meat and one without. Thirty female raters judged odor samples from the non-meat period as “more attractive, more pleasant, and less intense.” Diet demonstrably changes how a person smells, and perfume is worn on top of that rather than instead of it.

    Combine this with the finding that a quarter of people cannot smell 3M2H and the picture gets sharper. Your fragrance is always a mixture with you, the mixture differs between people, and the audience is not even receiving your contribution consistently.

    It changes the evaporation rate

    A 2025 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, “Exploring the impact of fragrance molecular and skin properties on the evaporation profile of fragrances,” reports that evaporation profiles depend on both the molecular properties of the fragrance and the properties of the skin. Only its title and abstract were reachable, so nothing more specific is claimed from it here.

    Sebum is the plausible mechanism. Sebaceous gland density reaches 400 to 900 glands per square centimeter on the scalp and forehead and is far lower on the limbs, and gland density measurably changes the lipid composition of the skin surface: palmitoleic acid and squalene rise progressively from forearm to chest to forehead. More surface lipid gives fragrance molecules more to dissolve into, which slows their escape into the air.

    Sebum also varies between people and over a lifetime. A study of 713 subjects aged from six months to 94 years found forehead sebum significantly higher in males than females between ages 13 and 70, peaking around age 50 in men and 40 in women, and declining earlier in women.

    Skin pH transforming the composition is the weak claim

    Skin surface pH genuinely varies. The same 713-subject study found forehead pH higher in both sexes above age 70, with a positive correlation between pH and advancing age.

    But the leap from “skin pH varies” to “skin pH chemically rewrites a perfume” is not supported by any work I could find. An alcoholic fragrance is applied and its solvent evaporates within minutes, which is a narrow window for surface pH to drive meaningful chemistry on materials that are mostly not pH-labile. The honest position is that this mechanism is asserted far more often than it is demonstrated, and that the well-evidenced explanations above are sufficient to account for what people notice.

    Why does a perfume seem to fade on you but not on other people?

    Because you adapt and they do not.

    Prolonged or repeated exposure to an odorant “typically leads to stimulus-specific decreases in olfactory sensitivity,” operating at both peripheral receptors and central neural processing. Sensitivity “recovers over time in the absence of further exposure,” with the timeline depending on concentration and duration, and adaptation in olfaction “has been shown to be very long-lasting in some cases.”

    Read the qualifier carefully: recovery requires the absence of further exposure. That never happens when the source is on your own wrist. You are in continuous exposure from the moment you spray until you wash.

    This one mechanism accounts for a great deal of the “it disappears on me” complaint, and it explains the specific shape of the complaint too. People report that a fragrance vanishes after an hour while others still comment on it, which is exactly what adaptation predicts and exactly what a genuine loss of projection would not.

    Which factors matter, and how much?

    Which popular explanations do not hold up?

    Do pulse points make perfume last longer?

    The claim is that warm, blood-rich sites such as the wrists, neck and inner elbows make fragrance last longer. I could locate no published study comparing application sites for longevity, and the physical reasoning runs the opposite way from the promise.

    Warmth raises vapor pressure, which increases how much material escapes into the air per minute. More escaping per minute means a more noticeable fragrance early and less left later. Applying to a warm site is a reasonable choice if you want to be noticed. It is not a longevity trick, and describing it as one gets the physics backwards.

    Does rubbing your wrists destroy the fragrance?

    The usual explanation, that friction crushes or breaks the molecules, is simply wrong. Molecules are not destroyed by rubbing two wrists together.

    What rubbing plausibly does is spread the liquid over a larger area and warm it slightly, and both of those speed the evaporation of the most volatile materials. So the observed effect may well be real while the stated mechanism is nonsense. The effect is small either way, and since there is no benefit to rubbing there is no reason to do it.

    Does skin pH change how a perfume smells?

    Covered above, and worth restating because it is the single most repeated claim in this subject. Skin pH varies measurably between people and with age. No published work establishes that this variation restructures a fragrance. Treat it as an untested hypothesis that has been repeated until it sounds like a finding.

    Do pheromone fragrances work?

    Reviewing decades of work in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2015, Tristram Wyatt concluded plainly: “We do not yet know if humans have pheromones.” He noted that finding androstenone and related steroids in human sweat, and knowing they act as pheromones in pigs, “doesn’t necessarily prove they’re also human pheromones.”

    No fragrance on the market can substantiate a pheromone effect on the available evidence. If a product’s core claim is pheromonal, the claim is ahead of the science.

    Does diet change how your perfume smells?

    This one is partly true, and the distinction matters. Diet has a documented effect on body odor, demonstrated in the red meat study above. It has no documented effect on the fragrance, which is a fixed formulation in a sealed bottle. Since what a person near you receives is the mixture of both, diet does change the result, by changing one of the two inputs. The popular version of the claim, that diet alters the perfume, is wrong in mechanism and roughly right in outcome.

    Troubleshooting what you are actually experiencing

    “It disappears on me within an hour.” Adaptation first, before anything else. Leave the room for twenty minutes and come back to your own sleeve, or ask someone. If others still smell it, nothing is wrong. If genuinely nobody can, the composition may be top-heavy, the dose may be too low, or dry skin may be releasing it faster; try a base-heavy fragrance and a moisturized application site before concluding your skin is unusual.

    “People say I smell strongly of it and I cannot smell it at all.” The expected outcome of adaptation, and confirmation that projection is fine. The practical response is to reduce your dose rather than increase it, because your own perception is the least reliable gauge available to you.

    “It smelled wonderful in the store and wrong at home.” Several causes stack. Store testers are sprayed on paper or on skin already carrying other fragrances; the shop air is saturated; and you tested the first ten minutes of a composition that takes hours to resolve. Retest on clean skin, judge at thirty minutes and two hours, and compare against a paper strip sprayed at the same time.

    “It smells quite different on my friend than on me.” If the fragrance is violet, iris or orris-led, the beta-ionone receptor difference is a documented candidate: a single OR5A1 variant accounts for more than 96 percent of the variation in sensitivity to that material, and people on the two sides of it describe the same stimulus differently. If it is musk-led, the musk receptor findings apply. Neither is something you can change, and neither means your skin is at fault.

    “Everyone else loves it and I find it faint and boring.” Consider that you may be the less sensitive party rather than the fragrance being weak. A quarter of people have a specific anosmia to a major body odor component, and receptor variants for musks are common, so being under-served by a particular material class is unremarkable.

    How to test a fragrance on your own skin

    1. Apply one fragrance at a time, to clean skin with no scented moisturizer, deodorant or hair product on the same area.
    2. Use two or three sprays, which matches the roughly three-spray typical application found in consumer exposure surveys.
    3. Smell at five minutes, thirty minutes and two hours. The opening tells you least about how you will actually wear it.
    4. Leave the room for twenty minutes before each later check, so adaptation has a chance to reset.
    5. Spray a paper strip at the same time and keep it. The difference between paper and skin at two hours is the part your body is contributing.
    6. Ask one other person what they smell, at normal conversational distance rather than at your wrist.
    7. Pay particular attention to iris, violet and orris compositions such as Dior Homme. These lean on beta-ionone, the material with the clearest documented receptor variant behind it, so reactions genuinely differ between people.
    8. Retest on a different day. Ambient temperature, humidity, what you have eaten and your washing routine all vary.

    The limits of what is known

    The receptor genetics, the adaptation research and the diet study are directly measured and hold up well. Everything connecting skin properties specifically to perfume is thinner.

    The 2025 evaporation study indicates that skin properties matter, but only its title and abstract were reachable, so this article does not claim which individual skin parameters drove the effect or that any particular measurement technique was used. The beta-ionone material is now quoted from the primary paper’s abstract; the full text was not reachable, so the sensitivity multiples that circulate in secondary write-ups have been dropped entirely, and the roughly half-the-population figure is attributed to a teaching resource rather than to a measurement. There is no controlled trial comparing application sites for longevity, no published quantification of how much sebum extends wear, and no demonstration that ordinary skin pH variation restructures a fragrance.

    It is also worth being precise about what the genetics does and does not explain. The documented cases concern specific material classes: steroids, ionones, certain musks, certain body odor compounds. A twin study of 1,573 people found no heritability for rose, eugenol, amyl acetate or mercaptans. Receptor variation is a powerful explanation for particular disagreements, not a general theory of why perfume is subjective.

    Anyone who quotes you a percentage for how much of the effect is “skin chemistry” is inventing it. What can be said with confidence is that the fragrance in the bottle is fixed, the person wearing it is not, and the person smelling it is not either.

    If you are sensitive to this effect, test before committing to a large bottle. Woody and musky compositions such as Le Labo Santal 33 sit close to skin and interact visibly with background body odor, and they also sit in exactly the material class where receptor variation is documented. High-impact compositions such as 1 Million project largely on their own terms and vary less between wearers. Testing small is more affordable than it used to be, if less universal than you would hope: about 9.7% of what we list — around 382 bottles — comes in 30 ml (1 oz) or smaller, and about 5% in under 20 ml.

    The same fragrance can carry very different prices because it reaches the buyer through different channels. Authorized distribution builds in brand-set margins; parallel imports, closeouts, testers and unboxed units do not. Size, concentration, batch age and seasonal repricing explain most of the rest. Below a certain point, a low price stops signaling channel and starts signaling counterfeit.

    Why does one retailer charge twice what another does for the same bottle?

    Because the bottle took a different route to the shelf. A department store buys from the brand’s authorized distributor at agreed terms and is supported in return with training, testers, display furniture, cooperative advertising and a returns allowance. All of that is funded out of the price. A discounter often buys from a secondary source: stock a distributor in another market over-ordered, inventory from an account that closed, a reference the brand discontinued, or a parcel routed around the brand’s own price structure. The bottle is identical. The cost of getting it in front of you is not, and neither is the set of obligations attached to selling it.

    That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth being blunt: most of the price difference between a department store and an online discounter is not a difference in the product. It is a difference in who paid for the retail experience.

    What is the grey market, and is it legal?

    Grey market, also called parallel import, means genuine branded goods sold outside the brand’s authorized distribution network. It is not counterfeit, and in the United States it is generally lawful.

    The Second Circuit has stated the underlying principle directly: “Trademark law does not reach the sale of genuine goods bearing a true mark even though the sale is not authorized by the mark owner.” Once a brand has sold a bottle, it has generally exhausted its right to control who resells that bottle. This is the same first-sale logic that lets you resell a book or a car.

    The Supreme Court applied the copyright version of the rule to exactly this kind of case in Quality King Distributors v. L’anza Research International. L’anza made hair care products with copyrighted label artwork and sold to foreign distributors at prices 35% to 40% below what it charged domestic ones. Product sold to a distributor in Malta made its way back into the United States and was resold through unauthorized retailers at discounted prices. The Court held the first sale doctrine applied, and that the importation right was limited by it. Once L’anza sold the goods, it had exhausted its distribution right, and subsequent owners could resell them in the US.

    Two conclusions follow. A discounter selling genuine parallel stock is not doing anything unlawful, and a brand’s disapproval is not evidence a bottle is fake. Equally, grey market is not a synonym for bargain: it describes where a bottle came from, not whether it is good value.

    How much does parallel distribution actually change the price?

    The Quality King record gives an unusually concrete answer, because the price gap was litigated. L’anza charged its foreign distributors 35% to 40% less than its domestic distributors for identical product.

    That gap is the reseller’s entire working capital. Everything the shopper eventually sees as a discount has to come out of it, alongside freight, import costs, currency risk, the reseller’s own margin and the retailer’s margin. Run the arithmetic with illustrative numbers to see how it lands. Suppose domestic distributor cost is $100 and the foreign equivalent is $62.50, the midpoint of that documented range. The parallel chain has $37.50 of headroom per unit. If it keeps two thirds of that as margin and cost recovery, the shopper sees roughly $12.50 off a $100 basis, or about 12%. If it keeps a third, the shopper sees about 25%.

    Those are illustrative figures, not measurements, and they are here to make one point: a documented 35% to 40% gap at the distributor level supports a consumer discount in the region of 10% to 30%, not 80%. When a discount is dramatically larger than the channel gap can fund, the explanation is somewhere other than distribution. That usually means condition (tester, unboxed, damaged carton), age (old batch, discontinued reference), volume (a decant sold as a bottle), or counterfeit.

    When is a parallel import actually a different product?

    Sometimes it genuinely is, and US Customs has a formal process for that situation. This is the part of the grey market most buyers have never heard of, and the one that occasionally explains a real difference between two bottles bearing the same name.

    Customs regulations restrict the importation of gray market articles that are physically and materially different from those the US trademark owner authorized for sale here. A trademark owner claiming that protection must state the basis with particularity and support it with competent evidence. The regulation lists what Customs will consider, including the specific composition of both the authorized and gray market product including chemical composition; formulation, product construction or composite components; performance and operational characteristics; differences resulting from legal or regulatory requirements and certification; and other explicitly defined factors likely to result in consumer deception.

    Goods found to be materially different can still be imported, but only if labelled. The required statement is prescribed word for word: “This product is not a product authorized by the United States trademark owner for importation and is physically and materially different from the authorized product.” It must be conspicuous, legible, and placed in close proximity to the trademark as it appears in its most prominent location.

    If you ever see that sticker on a fragrance carton, it is not a counterfeit warning. It is the opposite: a legally imported parallel unit, disclosed as required. It does tell you the US trademark owner has established that this version differs in some documented way from the version it authorizes for sale here, which is worth knowing before you compare prices. Most parallel fragrance in the US carries no such label, because most of it has not been found materially different.

    Are you comparing the same size and the same concentration?

    A large share of apparent price chaos is a comparison error rather than a market phenomenon, and two variables cause most of it.

    Concentration comes first. Eau de toilette and eau de parfum sold under one name are different products with different material costs and prices. Neither term has a legal definition in the United States: FDA does not define fragrance concentration terms and does not approve fragrance products before they go on the market. The brand decides what to call a concentration and what to charge, so the only reliable reading is the concentration printed on the listing in front of you.

    Size compounds it, because price per millilitre almost always falls as the bottle gets larger. A bigger bottle that looks expensive next to a small one is frequently the cheaper purchase.

    The figures above are an illustration of the arithmetic rather than any real product’s prices. The habit is what matters: convert every candidate to a price per millilitre, then check that you are comparing the same concentration, before you draw any conclusion at all. Our own catalogue makes the trap concrete. The median eau de parfum we list works out to about $0.88 per ml and the median eau de toilette about $0.59, which looks like a 49% premium for the stronger concentration. It is not. Those two medians describe different fragrances from different brands, and when you narrow to the 73 fragrances we stock in both concentrations, the same-name premium is about 13% per millilitre. The catalogue-wide gap is mostly telling you that expensive brands favour eau de parfum, which is a fact about brand positioning rather than about concentration.

    Does an older batch justify a lower price?

    Usually yes, and how much depends on the fragrance rather than on the calendar. Volatile top notes, typically citrus and light aromatics, degrade first. Woody, resinous and oriental compositions tolerate age comparatively well. A peer-reviewed review of essential oil stability found compositional change proceeding considerably faster under illumination than in darkness, and notes that a temperature rise of 10 degrees Celsius approximately doubles chemical reaction rates, which is why storage history matters more than the printed date.

    Brands that discuss shelf life publicly give ranges rather than deadlines. Creed’s guidance is three to five years once opened, ideally used within two to three, with unopened bottles lasting considerably longer because they have had no exposure to oxygen. There is no US requirement for any of this to appear on a label: FDA states there are no US laws or regulations requiring cosmetics to have specific shelf lives or expiration dates, and calls shelf-life determination the manufacturer’s responsibility.

    So a discount on older stock is rational, and it should be larger on a citrus cologne than on an aged oud. Discontinuation cuts the other way: once a reference is gone, remaining stock can appreciate, and sought-after discontinued bottles routinely sell above original retail.

    What do “MSRP” and “list price” discounts actually mean?

    Less than the percentage suggests, and the FTC has said so for decades. The Guides Against Deceptive Pricing set out three relevant rules.

    On a retailer’s own former price, a comparison is legitimate only where the former price “is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time.” Where no sales actually occurred at that price, the advertiser must still be able to show the product was “openly and actively offered for sale, for a reasonably substantial period of time, in the recent, regular course of his business.”

    On comparisons with competitors, the advertised higher price “must be based upon fact, and not be fictitious or misleading,” and should reflect substantial sales at principal retail outlets rather than isolated small ones.

    On manufacturer list prices, the Guides are blunt: a list price is a valid comparison only where “it is the price at which substantial (that is, not isolated or insignificant) sales are made in the advertiser’s trade area.” They also state that a manufacturer “may not affix price tickets containing inflated prices as an accommodation to particular retailers who intend to use such prices as the basis for advertising fictitious price reductions.”

    The practical consequence is simple. Ignore the struck-through number. Build your own reference range from what several established retailers charge today, and measure every offer against that rather than against a figure the seller supplied.

    How do import rules and shipping change the price?

    They have moved, and they are now part of the answer to why identical bottles diverge. CBP processed more than 1 billion shipments under the de minimis value exemption in fiscal 2023, a channel that allowed low-value parcels to enter with minimal data and minimal cost. By March 2024, CBP reported that 85% of its cargo seizures originated as de minimis shipments. An April 2025 executive order closed that route for parcels from China and Hong Kong, requiring shipment details to be reported to CBP and duties to be paid regardless of value.

    Two consequences matter at the checkout. A very low price supported by a duty-free direct-from-overseas parcel is a thinner proposition than it was, and a quoted price that excludes duties may not be what you end up paying. And delivery is part of the comparison, not a footnote: a listing that is $8 cheaper and charges $14 for delivery is not cheaper. Free delivery is common in US fragrance retail but it is not universal, minimum-order thresholds vary, and remote states frequently attract a surcharge, so put one landed total next to the other before you decide.

    How low is too low?

    There is no single threshold, but there is a shape to it, and the shape follows what each explanation can actually fund.

    These bands are a rule of thumb drawn from how the discount market behaves, not a measured statistic. The FBI lists significantly lower pricing among its counterfeit indicators, so the deepest band deserves the most suspicion. The other thing a very low price can signal is volume: a 100 ml listing priced like a 10 ml one is often a decant or a split, meaning liquid transferred by a third party into another container. Plenty of Perfumes does not sell decants or split bottles in any form.

    How to compare two prices properly

    1. Write down the exact reference: brand, fragrance name, concentration and size in millilitres.
    2. Convert each candidate price to a price per millilitre. Compare those numbers, not the totals.
    3. Confirm both listings are the same concentration. If one is eau de toilette and one is eau de parfum, you are not comparing prices, you are comparing products.
    4. Note the stated condition of each unit: sealed retail, tester or unboxed. An unstated condition is a gap in the information, not a bargain.
    5. Add delivery, any remote-state surcharge, and any duties the quoted price excludes.
    6. Read both return policies, including who pays return postage on a change of mind and whether a restocking fee applies.
    7. Ask for the batch code where the seller will share it, so you know roughly how old each unit is.
    8. Check where each ships from, since a direct overseas parcel carries different duty and delivery risk from domestic inventory.
    9. Only now look at the MSRP, and treat it as marketing rather than as a reference price.

    What price alone cannot tell you

    Price cannot tell you whether a bottle is genuine, and this is the most important limit of all because it cuts both ways. Counterfeit sellers price high as well as low, precisely because buyers use price as a proxy for authenticity. A fake sold at 25% off looks exactly like legitimate grey-market stock on a search results page, and a fake priced at full retail on a professional-looking site defeats the low-price heuristic entirely. Price is a screening signal, not a verdict.

    The inverse belief is equally wrong. Buying from an authorized retailer buys you brand-supported service, returns handling and, where a brand offers one, access to its own goodwill. It does not mean that an unauthorized retailer is selling something different. Both can be selling identical bottles from the same production run, and courts have repeatedly confirmed that reselling genuine goods outside the authorized network is lawful in general terms.

    Price also cannot tell you how a bottle was stored, which frequently matters more than how old it is. It cannot tell you whether a reference has been quietly reformulated, since brands rarely announce that and packaging often does not change. It cannot tell you whether a parallel unit was produced to a different market specification, unless it carries the Customs label that says so. And it cannot tell you the seller’s identity, which is the variable most worth resolving before you pay.

    What a price can usefully be paired with is disclosure. Condition is the part of a listing that does most of that work: across the 3,832 bottles we currently list, about 93% are sealed retail units, around 5.6% are marked as testers and about 1.4% as unboxed. A price attached to a stated condition is a comparable price. A price attached to no condition at all is a number without a unit, and no amount of arithmetic will fix that.

    A tester is a full-size production bottle a brand supplies to retailers for in-store sampling. The fragrance inside is the same formula as the retail version. What differs is presentation: usually a plain white or brown carton instead of the retail box, often no decorative cap, and wording such as “tester” or “not for individual resale” on the carton.

    What is a tester bottle, and where does it come from?

    Testers are made by the brand, filled with the same product, and shipped to authorized retail accounts so customers can try a fragrance before buying. They are a marketing expense rather than saleable inventory, written off in the brand’s logistics budget. Counters receive them in volume, they are replaced on a cycle, and the surplus moves on.

    That surplus is where secondary-market tester stock comes from. A counter refreshes its display and the old units are no longer needed. A retail account closes and its stock is liquidated. A brand discontinues a reference and the testers supporting it become obsolete along with it. A distributor over-orders for a launch that underperforms. None of those routes involves the bottle being opened by a customer, and all of them end with genuine full-size bottles sitting in a warehouse with no retail box to go back into.

    The word describes packaging and intended channel. It does not describe a different product, a diluted product, a returned product, or a bottle somebody sprayed at a counter and boxed back up. A tester arriving from a reputable seller should be full and unused.

    Is the liquid in a tester different from retail stock?

    There is no evidence that it is, and there is a straightforward reason to think it is not.     Now apply that to a bottle that stood on a lit retail counter for eight months, was sprayed dozens of times so air replaced liquid in the headspace, and was never capped. The opening thins out. The base becomes proportionally more prominent. The result smells heavier, denser and longer-lasting than a fresh bottle of the same fragrance, and a customer who liked that impression reasonably concludes testers are stronger. What they are describing is a fragrance that has lost its most delicate layer, not one with more material in it.

    There is a safety dimension worth knowing. The European Commission’s scientific committee summary on fragrance allergies notes that oxidation products of common fragrance terpenes, limonene, linalool, geraniol and linalyl acetate among them, have been identified as potent sensitizers in predictive animal tests, and that the oxidised forms give frequent allergic contact reactions in patch-tested dermatitis patients while the non-oxidised compounds rarely do. Heavily used counter testers are the most air-exposed fragrance bottles in the retail world. A sealed tester bought online is a very different object from a display unit that has been open for a year.

    The practical conclusion is not that testers are worse. It is that age and exposure are the variable to ask about, and the word “tester” tells you nothing about either on its own.

    How does a tester differ from a sample, a decant, or an unboxed bottle?

    These four words get used interchangeably and mean four different things. Only three of them involve a factory-filled bottle of the brand’s own liquid, and only one of them involves a bottle that is not the manufacturer’s at all.

    The row that matters most is volume. A tester holds the full advertised size, and a sample or decant does not. So when a listing quotes a tester price against a full retail price, you are comparing like for like on how much fragrance you get. A decant priced per millilitre is a different transaction entirely, and it carries a risk testers do not: nobody can verify what was poured into it.

    Is it legal to sell a bottle marked “not for individual resale”?

    Generally yes, in the United States, and the reasoning is worth understanding because it also explains where the limits sit.

    The Second Circuit put the principle plainly in Polymer Technology Corp. v. Mimran, decided in 1992: “Trademark law does not reach the sale of genuine goods bearing a true mark even though the sale is not authorized by the mark owner.” A marking that restricts resale reflects the brand’s contract with its distributor or its retail account. It is a promise one business made to another. It is not a law that binds whoever later owns the bottle, and breaking a distribution agreement is a matter between those two businesses.

    That principle has real limits, and the same case sets them out. The products in Polymer Technology were contact lens solutions sold in two lines: professional kits labelled for dispensing by an eye care professional, and retail packs. The professional kits lacked FDA-required warnings and ingredient lists, and sometimes lacked tamper-evident seals, which the retail packs carried. The court treated the first-sale principle as not protecting resale where it compromises “the control of quality that a trademark holder is entitled to maintain,” and indicated that violating restrictions on distribution to specific customer classes can support an infringement claim where it comes packaged with regulatory non-compliance. Be precise about what the court actually did: it reversed the denial of a preliminary injunction and sent the case back for fresh findings on those theories, rather than deciding the merits itself.

    Translate that into a buyer’s terms. A tester in a plain carton is ordinary genuine stock and buying one is unremarkable. But the case is a warning that goods produced for a non-retail channel can carry less information than retail goods, because they were never intended to satisfy retail labelling requirements. That is the thing to check, and it is a labelling question rather than a legality question.

    What labelling do you actually lose on a plain tester carton?

    Possibly more than you expect, and the reason is a distinction in how FDA applies two different statutes. FDA requires product identity and net quantity on the principal display panel, and the responsible firm’s name and full street address, the ingredient declaration and the country of origin on the information panel. Crucially, statements required under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act must appear on the inside as well as any outside container or wrapper, while Fair Packaging and Labeling Act requirements apply only to the label of the outer container.

    In practice, that means the ingredient declaration and net quantity are often carried by the printed retail box rather than by the bottle. A plain tester carton may reproduce all of it, some of it, or very little of it, and there is no way to predict which from the word “tester” alone.

    For most buyers this is a non-issue. For anyone managing a known fragrance allergy it is the single most important practical difference between a tester and a boxed retail unit, and it is worth resolving before you order rather than after. Ask the seller for a photograph of the carton panels, or read the ingredient list on the brand’s own website.

    When is a tester the smart buy, and when is it not?

    When you want the fragrance rather than the object. Buying a tester makes sense if you are restocking something you already wear, exploring an expensive house without committing at full retail, or buying a large size you intend to finish. It makes less sense if the bottle is a gift, if the presentation is part of why you want it, or if you collect sealed bottles.

    It helps to think about what a rational discount looks like. What you give up is a printed carton, usually a cap, and a unit that is often older than current retail stock. What you keep is the full advertised volume of the manufacturer’s liquid in the manufacturer’s bottle with the manufacturer’s atomizer. On that accounting, a modest discount is underpriced risk transferred to you and a very deep discount usually means something else is going on, most often that the unit is much older than the listing implies or that the word “tester” is doing work the seller has not explained.

    How to check a tester listing before you buy

    1. Confirm the stated size. A tester should be the full advertised volume, not a reduced one.
    2. Confirm the concentration matches the retail version you are comparing against, since eau de toilette and eau de parfum of the same name are different products at different prices.
    3. Look for a photograph of the actual carton and bottle. A plain carton marked “tester” is what you want to see, not a stock image of a boxed unit.
    4. Check whether a cap is included. If the listing does not say, assume it is not.
    5. Ask whether the unit is sealed and unused. Surplus tester stock normally is; a display unit that has been sprayed is a different proposition and should be described as such.
    6. Ask for the batch code if age matters for the fragrance type you are buying, and look it up before ordering.
    7. If you have a fragrance allergy, ask for a photograph of the carton’s information panel or check the ingredient list on the brand’s site.
    8. Read the return terms, and confirm tester units are not excluded from them.

    If a tester arrives and is clearly not what the listing described, treat it the way you would any misdescribed order: photograph the carton, the bottle and the batch code before doing anything else, then contact the seller in writing and ask for a return authorization.     What a tester listing cannot tell you

    It cannot tell you how the bottle was stored between the factory and the warehouse, and storage matters more than the tester designation does. Two testers of the same fragrance from the same production run can be in materially different condition depending on whether they sat in a climate-controlled stockroom or a hot loading bay.

    It cannot tell you whether the unit ever stood open on a counter. Most secondary-market tester stock is surplus that was never displayed, but the category includes both, and no listing can prove which one you are getting.

    It cannot confirm the liquid is identical to retail. As set out above, that is the reasonable inference from cost and function, not a published fact. If a brand ever documented a difference, this article would be wrong.

    And a plain tester carton is not evidence of authenticity. If anything it is easier to imitate than printed retail packaging, because there is less artwork to get right. That cuts both ways: it means you cannot use the carton to reassure yourself, and it means you should not treat a plain carton as suspicious either. Judge a tester the way you would judge any bottle: an identifiable seller, a condition stated in words, batch codes that match between bottle and carton, and returns you can actually reach.

    No. There is no evidence brands fill testers differently, and no commercial reason to. What people notice is age and air exposure: volatile top notes fade first, which leaves base materials proportionally more prominent and reads as heavier and longer-lasting. That is a fragrance missing its most delicate layer, not one containing more material.

    Are tester perfumes older than retail bottles?

    Unboxed means the bottle is sold without its printed retail carton. The bottle, the atomizer and the fragrance are the manufacturer’s, unchanged. Nothing about a missing box alters the liquid. What you lose is gift presentation, some printed information that legally only has to appear on the outer carton, and the box’s protection from light.

    What does “unboxed” actually mean on a listing?

    It describes the packaging state of a genuine bottle, nothing more. The unit is the manufacturer’s full-size bottle, normally with its cap, normally factory filled and unused, shipped without the printed carton it was originally packed in. A retailer protects it in transit with its own packing material instead.

    It is worth separating unboxed from three things it gets confused with. It is not a tester, which is a bottle a brand supplies to retailers for in-store sampling, usually in a plain white or brown carton and often without a cap. It is not a used or partly used bottle, which should be described as such and priced accordingly. And it is emphatically not a decant or a split, where somebody has transferred liquid from the manufacturer’s bottle into another container. Plenty of Perfumes does not sell decants or split bottles at all.

    The reason those distinctions matter is that only one of them changes what is in the bottle. Tester, unboxed and sealed retail all describe factory-filled manufacturer bottles. A decant describes liquid whose chain of custody broke the moment somebody opened the original.

    Why do perfumes end up without a box?

    The mundane reasons are the common ones, and they are all about cardboard rather than about fragrance.

    Cartons get crushed, water-marked, scuffed or torn during warehouse handling and transit while the bottle inside is untouched. Retail display and window units come out of their boxes and are never reboxed. Gift sets and value sets are broken up so the components can be sold individually, which leaves a full-size bottle with no carton of its own because it never had one. Damaged-carton stock is pulled from a distributor’s saleable inventory in bulk and liquidated, because a large retailer will not shelve a dented box.     The honest summary: buying unboxed costs you a check, not a guarantee. Price that in, and put more weight on the checks that remain.

    Not at the moment of sale, and potentially over time, depending entirely on how you store it.

    Fragrance degrades through heat, air and light. A peer-reviewed review of essential oil stability found compositional change proceeding considerably faster under illumination than in darkness, and notes that a temperature rise of 10 degrees Celsius approximately doubles chemical reaction rates. Commercial stability laboratories test against precisely those variables, and accelerated aging protocols raise the temperature to simulate longer storage, which tells you how directly heat maps onto age in this product category.

    This is not an abstract concern about smell alone. The European Commission’s scientific committee summary on fragrance allergies notes that oxidation products of common fragrance terpenes, including limonene, linalool, geraniol and linalyl acetate, have been identified as potent sensitizers in predictive animal tests, and that the oxidised forms give frequent allergic contact reactions in patch-tested dermatitis patients while the non-oxidised compounds rarely do. Degradation is a skin-safety variable, not only an aesthetic one.

    The carton’s role in all of this is simple: it is a light shield. Creed’s published guidance is to store a bottle in its original box, in a cool dark place such as a bedroom drawer or a wardrobe shelf with a stable temperature, away from sunlight, high temperatures such as a bathroom or a car glovebox, and extreme temperature fluctuation. The placement rule is the important part: statements required under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act must appear on the inside as well as any outside container or wrapper, while Fair Packaging and Labeling Act requirements apply only to the label of the outer container.

    In practice that means the ingredient declaration and the net quantity statement are frequently carried by the carton alone, especially on smaller bottles where there is little room for a printed panel. Take the carton away and that information goes with it. Nothing improper has happened; the product was labelled lawfully when it shipped.

    Read down that table for your own situation. For someone buying a fragrance they already wear, intending to finish the bottle, and storing it in a drawer, almost every row scores low and a modest discount is genuinely good value. For someone buying a gift or a sealed collectible, the same bottle at the same discount is a poor purchase at any price. The discount that makes sense is personal, not a market rate. There is one wrinkle worth saying out loud, because it cuts against the assumption the whole category rests on: in our own catalogue, unboxed units are not reliably cheaper. Across the 22 cases where we stock the same fragrance in the same size both unboxed and sealed, the unboxed listing was the more expensive of the two, by a median of about 16%. Twenty-two pairs is a small sample and those unboxed units skew toward niche lines and small bottles, so treat it as a caution rather than a law. But it does mean that the word “unboxed” on a listing is not by itself a discount signal.     How do you judge an unboxed listing?

    It cannot tell you how the bottle was stored before it reached the warehouse. That matters more for an older production run than a recent one, and the batch code is the only handle you have on it.

    It cannot tell you whether the carton it came from carried information the bottle does not. The FPLA placement rule permits omission from the immediate container but does not require it, and practice varies by brand and by bottle size, so the only reliable way to know is to look at the bottle in the listing photographs.

    And a missing box is not evidence about authenticity in either direction, so it should neither raise nor lower your guard on that question. The checks that still work, matching the seller to a real identity, reading the batch code, assessing the atomizer and comparing the price to a real market range, are the ones to spend your attention on.

    What a good listing can do is say which condition the unit is in, in words, rather than leaving you to infer it from a photograph.     One US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml. That is why a 50 ml bottle is labeled 1.7 fl oz and a 100 ml bottle 3.4 fl oz: the metric figure is the real fill and the ounce figure is a rounded conversion. Compare bottles on price per millilitre, and size the bottle to how fast you will finish it.

    Everything else in this article follows from those two ideas. The conversion explains the strange numbers on the box. Price per millilitre is the only comparison that survives contact with different bottle sizes, different concentrations and different discounts.

    What is the exact conversion from ounces to ml?

    One US fluid ounce equals 29.5735295625 millilitres, exactly. The figure is exact rather than measured because both units are defined: the US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, the inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres, and a fluid ounce is one one-hundred-and-twenty-eighth of a gallon. NIST’s own conversion tables give the working value as 2.957353 × 101 millilitres.

    Two cautions. The first is that the imperial fluid ounce used in the United Kingdom is a different unit, about 28.41 ml. British and American ounce figures for the same bottle will not match. The second is that this is a volume conversion, not a weight conversion; fragrance is sold by volume, and the two are not interchangeable because ethanol is lighter than water.

    Why are perfume bottles sold at 30, 50 and 100 ml?

    Because the industry settled on those numbers and nothing forces it to change. There is no law prescribing them.

    In the European Union, mandatory pack sizes were abolished by Directive 2007/45/EC, which repealed the earlier directives that had set prescribed ranges and retained mandatory nominal quantities only for wine and spirit drinks. Cosmetics are free. In the United States, cosmetic regulation under 21 CFR Part 701 governs what the label must say, not how much liquid the bottle may hold. Nobody is required to sell 50 ml rather than 47.

    What remains is convention, reinforced by tooling costs, by retail shelf design, and by the fact that consumers now read 30, 50 and 100 as the normal steps. A brand that launched at 45 ml would be read as short-changing its customers, whatever the price per millilitre said.

    Why does the bottle say 1.7 oz and 3.4 oz?

    Because US law requires both units, and the ounce figure is a conversion of the metric fill rather than a fill in its own right.

    The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, at 15 U.S.C. § 1453(a)(2), requires the net quantity of contents to be stated on the principal display panel “using the most appropriate units of both the customary inch/pound system of measure … and … the SI metric system.” That dual-declaration requirement took effect on 14 February 1994. NIST Handbook 130, the model regulation most states adopt, carries the same rule: from that date, “appropriate units of both systems shall be presented in a declaration of quantity,” subject to narrow exemptions.

    FDA’s cosmetic rules then constrain the format. Under 21 CFR 701.13, liquid measure must be expressed in terms of the US gallon of 231 cubic inches and its quart, pint and fluid-ounce subdivisions; a declaration of less than one ounce “shall be expressed in common or decimal fractions of the respective ounce”; and decimals “shall not be carried out to more than two places.”

    So a European-made 50 ml bottle has a metric fill of 50 ml, which converts to 1.6907 fl oz, which is printed as 1.7. The arithmetic below is mine and is straightforward division, but it is worth seeing laid out, because it settles most of the confusion about these labels.

    The reverse direction is where people trip. A label reading 3.4 fl oz does not mean 100.55 ml, even though 3.4 × 29.5735 = 100.55 by arithmetic. It means 100 ml, rounded up for the ounce declaration. The metric number is the specification; the ounce number is derived from it.

    Before any of the conversions, one fact about how sizes are actually labelled. Of the 3,832 bottles we list, about 3,809 — some 96% — state their size only in fluid ounces. Every millilitre figure in this article, and on most of our own listings, is a conversion of an ounce label rather than a measured volume: 3.4 oz becomes 100 ml because that is the nominal bottle, not because anyone put a graduated cylinder to it.

    The sizes themselves cluster hard. About 1,885 listings are 100 ml (3.4 oz), 379 are 50 ml (1.7 oz), 334 are 125 ml (4.2 oz), 210 are 75 ml (2.5 oz), 173 are 30 ml (1 oz), 160 are 90 ml (3 oz) and 149 are 200 ml (6.8 oz), with 38 distinct sizes in all and a long thin tail down to 5 ml. Roughly 98 listings give no size we can read at all. So the size ladder is not a ladder: it is one dominant rung, a few real alternatives, and a scattering of oddities.

    Why is price per millilitre the only honest comparison?

    Because a sticker price compares two things at once — how much liquid you get and how much each unit of it costs — and hides both.

    Price per millilitre is simple division: price divided by millilitres. It is the one number that lets you compare a 30 ml at one price against a 100 ml at another, a discounted EDT against a full-price EDP, and a boxed unit against a tester of the same fragrance. Nothing else does that.

    No US federal law requires a seller to show it. NIST’s guide to US retail pricing laws states that unit pricing is mandatory in ten jurisdictions — Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and the District of Columbia — with voluntary provisions in nine more and no provisions at all in thirty-three states. Coverage also varies by product category. In practice, for fragrance, the arithmetic is yours to do.

    Two conversions worth memorising. To turn a price per ounce into a price per millilitre, divide by 29.5735. To turn a price per millilitre into a price per ounce, multiply by 29.5735.

    The per-millilitre penalty for buying small is steep and consistent. Across the roughly 3,820 of our listings with a readable size, the median works out to about $1.84 per ml at 30 ml (1 oz), $1.39 at 50 ml (1.7 oz), $0.60 at 100 ml (3.4 oz) and $0.30 at 200 ml (6.8 oz). A 30 ml costs roughly three times as much per millilitre as a 100 ml of the same liquid. And the exception is rare: among the 385 fragrances we stock in more than one size, the largest bottle fails to be the cheapest per millilitre in only about 5.5% of cases. Buying big is almost always cheaper per spray, which is an argument for buying big only if you are going to finish it.

    What are travel sizes, miniatures and atomisers?

    Four different things get called travel sizes, and they are not equivalent.

    Two points matter for anyone flying. The TSA liquids rule limits carry-on containers to 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less per item, all fitting in one quart-sized bag per passenger. A 100 ml bottle is therefore exactly at the carry-on ceiling, and a 125 ml or 200 ml bottle is not permitted in the cabin at all. And in the European Union, containers of less than five millilitres are exempt from the nominal-content declaration under Article 19(1)(b) of Regulation 1223/2009, which is why very small vials often carry no volume marking.

    One distinction is worth holding on to here: a travel size is not a decant. A travel size is a small bottle the manufacturer filled, sealed and sold as a small bottle, with the brand’s own atomiser on it. A decant is liquid somebody else transferred into a third-party sprayer, which means the volume, the pump and the chain of custody are all outside the brand’s control. The listing title is where the format is stated, so read it rather than inferring it from the price. The same logic applies to tester units, which are full-size bottles in plain cartons rather than a different product.

    How do you choose a bottle size?

    1. Estimate how long a bottle lasts you, not how long it lasts in theory. Count your sprays per wearing and how many days a week you wear that fragrance. A bottle you finish in eight months and a bottle you finish in eight years are different purchases. The spray-count arithmetic turns that into a number of months.
    2. Buy small on a fragrance you have not worn for a full day. The 30 ml costs more per millilitre, and that premium is cheaper than a 100 ml you stop reaching for. A proper wear test comes first.
    3. Buy large only on a fragrance you have finished a bottle of before. Repeat purchase is the only evidence that survives.
    4. Compute price per millilitre for every option before deciding. Divide price by millilitres. Do it for the 30, the 50 and the 100, including any discount, and write the three numbers down.
    5. Check whether the discount is on the size you actually want. A promotion on one size regularly inverts the usual ordering, which is the single most common way buyers overpay.
    6. Cross-check the concentration you are comparing. A 100 ml EDT and a 50 ml EDP are different products, not two sizes of one product, and price per millilitre does not make them comparable. See what the concentration labels mean.
    7. Prefer 100 ml or smaller if the bottle will travel with you. That is the TSA carry-on ceiling and it is not negotiable at the checkpoint.
    8. Factor in how long you will take to use it. A very large bottle of something you wear occasionally spends years partly full and partly air, which is the condition that ages a fragrance fastest. Where the bottle lives matters more the longer you keep it.

    Myth: travel sprays are a weaker version

    The claim: smaller formats are diluted.
    What the evidence shows: a manufacturer travel spray of a given fragrance at a given concentration is the same liquid as the full-size bottle. What differs is the container and, almost always, the price per millilitre.
    What people wrongly conclude: that weaker performance from a travel spray indicates a different formula, when the usual cause is a smaller or differently engineered atomiser.

    Myth: shelf labels are required to show price per ml

    The claim: unit pricing is the law.
    What the evidence shows: there is no federal unit-pricing requirement in the United States. Ten jurisdictions mandate it, nine treat it as voluntary, and thirty-three states have no provision at all — with coverage varying by product category even where it applies.
    What people wrongly conclude: that a displayed unit price is guaranteed present, standardised and comparable between retailers.

    The honest limits of this article

    The conversion arithmetic here is exact and checkable, and you should check it. What is not exact is the fill in any individual bottle. Filling lines work to tolerances, and the European framework for prepacked goods sets those tolerances explicitly: under the average-quantity system, the mean contents of a batch must not fall below the nominal quantity, only a small proportion of packages may fall below the nominal quantity minus the tolerable negative error, and none marked with the estimated sign may fall below twice that error. For nominal quantities between 100 and 200 ml, the tolerable negative error is 4.5 percent. A 100 ml bottle is therefore a bottle nominally holding 100 ml, not a guarantee of exactly 100.000 ml. Rounding conventions also differ between brands and between regions, so the same fill can appear as 3.3 or 3.4 fl oz on different packages. We have not measured any bottle, and the illustrative price arithmetic above uses invented figures chosen to make the comparison legible, not prices from this catalogue.

    Practical shortcuts

    For everyday use, three rounded facts cover almost everything: 30 ml is about one ounce, 50 ml is about 1.7 ounces, and 100 ml is about 3.4 ounces and is the largest bottle you can carry onto a US flight. For anything involving money, use the full 29.5735 and divide.

    What our own catalogue shows

We are quoting the median deliberately, and only the median: individual pairs run from a small discount on the little bottle to absurd multiples, because 5 ml miniatures sit in the same pool as 200 ml flacons and wreck any average built from them. The median is the figure that describes a typical pair of bottles on a shelf.

    One US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 ml. Bottles sold as 1 fl oz are usually filled to 30 ml, which is 1.0144 fl oz, so the round 30 is slightly more than a true ounce. The UK imperial fluid ounce is a different unit at roughly 28.41 ml and will not match American figures.

    Is 3.4 oz the same as 100 ml?

    Layering works when two fragrances share a note family and one clearly dominates. It fails when both compete for attention or when you use more than two. Research on odor mixtures found people can hardly identify more than three odorants in a mixture, so a third fragrance does not add a third character. It blurs the two already there.

    There is a second result that matters even more, and it is almost never mentioned in advice about layering: a 2026 preprint reports that mixing odors averages them rather than adding them. That paper has not completed peer review, so it is treated here as strong indicative evidence and not as settled fact. If it holds, most layering advice sorts itself into the part that works and the part that cannot.

    What does the research say about mixing scents?

    Three results from olfactory science set the boundaries of what layering can and cannot do.

    You cannot pick out more than about three things

    Reviewing the literature on odor mixtures, Thomas-Danguin and colleagues summarized the position plainly: “humans are hardly able to identify more than three odorants in a mixture that contains up to eight odorants.” The limit was established across several studies by Laing and colleagues, and trained experts hit the same ceiling when presented with complex, realistic odor sources.

    The ceiling is lower than that in practice. In a study of 43 subjects, participants identified only two components in mixtures of four to six, and tastes proved easier to pick out than smells.

    Now consider what you are actually combining. A finished fragrance is not one component. It is dozens of materials that a perfumer balanced deliberately, engineered to be perceived as a single coherent thing. Layering two of them is already asking a nose to do something near the edge of what it can do.

    A 2026 preprint finds that mixtures average rather than add

    This is the newest result and the least settled. A 2026 preprint by Pellegrino and colleagues quantified perceptual interactions across 432 mixtures composed of 144 component odorants, with at least 15 trained panellists evaluating each component and each mixture. Nearly all mixtures “were explained by a linear average of their component quality profiles,” and averaging predicted mixture perception better than the previous state of the art. Even mixtures previously reported to show emergent new qualities were equally well predicted by simple averaging.

    It is a preprint rather than a peer-reviewed publication, so treat it as strong indicative evidence rather than settled fact. But the implication is direct and it matches what people actually experience: when you layer, you are not stacking two characters on top of each other. You are moving to the midpoint between them. Averaging two distinctive things produces something less distinctive than either.

    Enough components and you get nothing in particular

    Weiss and colleagues, in PNAS in 2012, took 86 molecules spanning olfactory space, diluted them to equivalent intensities, and mixed them in varying numbers. At “~30 components, most mixtures smelled alike” despite sharing no molecules at all. Participants who learned a name for one many-component mixture applied that name more readily to entirely different mixtures of about thirty equal-intensity components spanning the same space, but not to mixtures with fewer components or to mixtures that did not span the space.

    This is the logical endpoint of averaging. Average enough different profiles together and the result converges on the middle of the space, and the middle of the space has no identity.

    Intensity does not stack either

    The mixture literature catalogues several outcomes: masking, blending into a single new perceived entity, hyper-addition, complete addition and hypo-addition. Hypo-addition, where a mixture is less intense than its components would predict, is described as a regular occurrence, and the review notes that at the receptor level the response to a mixture is in many cases lower than the response to its most effective single component. Spraying two fragrances at full dose does not reliably give you twice the presence.

    None of this says layering is pointless. It says the returns diminish early and then go negative, and that the mechanism is averaging rather than accumulation.

    How many fragrances can you layer?

    Why does layering usually reduce character rather than add it?

    Because averaging is a smoothing operation. If one fragrance is sharp and green and the other is warm and sweet, the average of the two is neither sharp nor especially warm. The distinctive edges of both are the first thing lost, because they are exactly what differs between the two profiles being averaged.

    This explains a pattern that frustrates people. Two fragrances you genuinely like, layered, frequently produce something you like less than either. Nothing went wrong. Averaging did what averaging does.

    It also explains why the combinations that do work share a common shape. If the two fragrances already agree on most of their profile and differ in one dimension, then averaging them barely moves the shared part and produces a modest shift along the one axis where they differ. That is a controlled adjustment. Layering two fragrances that disagree everywhere is not an adjustment, it is a compromise, and compromises are bland.

    What combinations reliably work?

    The principle follows directly from the above: give the pair a large shared region and one clear axis of difference, then let one of them lead.

    The woody-plus-citrus row deserves attention, because it is the one case where you partly escape the averaging problem. Two fragrances that peak at different times are not fully mixed in perception at any single moment. The citrus dominates the first twenty minutes, the wood dominates the next several hours, and the period of genuine overlap is short.

    What reliably fails?

    • Two complex, loud compositions. Both are built to lead. Averaging them removes what made each one distinctive, and suppression means the result is quieter than either alone.
    • Opposed families with no shared ground. A sharp aquatic over a smoky oud shares almost nothing, so the average lands in an area neither fragrance was designed to occupy.
    • Two heavy gourmands. Sweetness accumulates faster than complexity does, and the result becomes cloying well before it becomes interesting.
    • Anything plus unaccounted scented products. Scented lotion, deodorant, body wash and hair product are components in the mixture whether you planned them or not, and they count against the same identification limit.
    • Three or more fragrances. Past the limit the result is both unpredictable and, more importantly, not reproducible. You cannot iterate on something you cannot repeat.
    • Layering to fix a fragrance you dislike. Averaging does not remove a quality you object to. It dilutes it while also diluting everything you did like, and you now own a worse version of two things.

    Does application order matter?

    Probably, and it is worth separating the reasoning from the evidence.

    The physical argument is sound. Volatility determines what leaves the skin first, so the fragrance you want to lead the opening should be the lighter one, and the heavier, base-driven fragrance goes underneath where it will still be present hours later. Applying the heavier one first also means the lighter fragrance is not landing on a wet layer of alcohol.

    What has not been tested, as far as I could find, is whether order changes the final perceived result once both have dried. Nothing in the mixture literature addresses application sequence on skin. Treat the order below as sensible practice reasoned from volatility, not as an evidenced rule.

    Why does an unscented base help?

    Because the identification limit is a budget, and it does not care where the components came from.

    If you can pick out roughly three things and your shampoo, deodorant and body lotion have already spent two of those slots, your carefully chosen pair of fragrances is competing for what remains. Switching to unscented products is the cheapest way to increase the share of the mixture that you actually chose.

    Unscented moisturizer may also help on its own terms. A 2025 study reports that fragrance evaporation profiles depend on the skin’s own properties as well as on the molecules, and more surface lipid plausibly slows evaporation, so a moisturized application site is a reasonable bet. That mechanism is plausible rather than demonstrated for moisturizer specifically.

    How to layer two fragrances

    1. Start from unscented skin. Use an unscented moisturizer, deodorant and hair product so the only variables are the two fragrances.
    2. Choose a dominant and a supporting fragrance before you spray. If both feel like a lead, pick a different pair.
    3. Check they share ground. Name one note family both contain. If you cannot, expect the average to land somewhere neither was designed for.
    4. Test on paper first. Spray both onto separate strips, hold them together, and smell. This filters out obvious failures at no cost.
    5. Apply the heavier, base-driven fragrance first, two sprays, and let it dry for about a minute.
    6. Apply the lighter fragrance second, one spray. Use less of the supporting fragrance than you would wear alone.
    7. Apply to the same area. Two fragrances on opposite wrists are two fragrances, not a layer.
    8. Wait thirty minutes before judging. Layered combinations often smell wrong in the first five minutes and then settle.
    9. Write down what you used and in what ratio. A combination you cannot reproduce is not a result.

    Which layering claims do not hold up?

    “Layering makes a scent uniquely yours”

    Partly true, and less romantic than it sounds. A mixture of two commercial fragrances is uncommon, so in a trivial sense it is distinctive. But averaging moves you toward the midpoint between two profiles, and midpoints are less distinctive than endpoints, not more. Pushed further, the olfactory white result shows that adding components drives mixtures toward a generic percept that is indistinguishable from other such mixtures. Uniqueness and character are not the same thing, and layering trades the second for a weak version of the first.

    “Layering makes a fragrance last longer”

    Only in one specific case. Adding a heavy, base-driven fragrance under a light one does add substantive material that will still be present after the light one has gone, which genuinely extends wear. Layering two light fragrances does not, and layering two loud ones tends to reduce perceived intensity through suppression. The general claim is false; the specific case is real.

    “More sprays of both makes it stronger”

    Mixture intensity commonly falls below the sum of its parts. Doubling the dose of both fragrances roughly doubles the material on your skin without doubling what anyone perceives, and it makes the combination harder to control and harder to repeat. If a layer is too faint, add dose to the dominant fragrance only.

    “Spray one on each wrist and they will blend in the air”

    They will not blend in any controlled way. You will produce two separate odor sources that a nearby person receives in proportions depending entirely on where they are standing. If you want a mixture, make the mixture on one patch of skin.

    “Any two fragrances can be layered if you get the ratio right”

    Ratio helps, but it cannot create shared ground that is not there. Two profiles that differ on nearly every axis average to something in between regardless of the proportions, and adjusting the ratio mostly just chooses which of the two you have diluted more.

    Troubleshooting a combination that is not working

    “It smells like nothing in particular.” The signature of averaging, and usually a sign the two fragrances shared too little. Averaging two dissimilar profiles lands between them, and the middle of odor space is exactly where character disappears. Rebuild the pair around a shared note family.

    “One of the two vanished completely.” Masking, where a dominant component obscures the others, is a documented outcome of mixing. Reduce the dominant fragrance rather than increasing the quiet one, since adding more total material tends to run into suppression.

    “It smelled good for ten minutes then turned.” The two fragrances have different volatility profiles, so the mixture you smell at five minutes is not the mixture at an hour. This is normal and is why the procedure above says to judge at thirty minutes. If the late stage is the problem, the heavier fragrance is the one to change.

    “It works on paper but not on skin.” Skin adds a background odor that paper does not, and it also changes evaporation rates. Paper testing filters out obvious failures; it does not predict the final result. Treat a paper test as a screen, not a verdict.

    “I cannot smell my combination at all after an hour.” Almost certainly adaptation rather than the layer failing. Prolonged exposure reduces sensitivity specifically to what you are exposed to, and recovery requires the exposure to stop, which it does not when the source is on your own skin. Ask somebody before adding more.

    “It smells different every time I wear it.” You are probably not applying the same ratio, or an unaccounted scented product is varying. Fix the dose of each fragrance, write it down, and standardize the products underneath before concluding the combination is unstable.

    When is layering the wrong idea?

    Be honest about the most common outcome. Two good fragrances layered usually produce something worse than either alone, because a finished fragrance is already a solved balance and averaging it against another one perturbs the solution without a plan. The suppression findings suggest you often end up with less presence, and the identification limit suggests you often end up with less definition.

    Layering earns its place in three situations: pushing one dimension of a fragrance you already like, extending a light composition with a heavier base, and combining products a house formulated to be combined. Outside those three, wearing one fragrance properly is the better default, and it is not a failure of imagination to do so.

    The limits of the evidence

    All of the mixture research discussed here was conducted with isolated odorants under controlled laboratory conditions, not with finished commercial perfumes on human skin. No study has tested layering as it is actually practiced. The numbers describe the shape of the constraint rather than a rule about bottles, and it is possible that finished fragrances, which are already coherent perceptual objects, behave somewhat differently from collections of individual molecules.

    The averaging result is a 2026 preprint and has not completed peer review. Its wording, its stimulus counts and its panel size were checked against the preprint itself and are reported here accurately, and it is consistent with the older, peer-reviewed olfactory white finding, but a preprint should not carry an argument on its own. The two peer-reviewed legs of this article, the three-odorant identification limit and the olfactory white convergence, reach the same practical conclusion without it: fewer components, one clear lead.

    The pairing recommendations are conventional perfumery practice reasoned from volatility and shared note families. They are not sourced to a study, and I have labeled them as practice throughout. Application order likewise has no evidence behind it beyond the physics of volatility.

    What transfers reliably from the research to the mirror: fewer components, one clear lead, and as much shared ground between the two as you can find.

    The low-risk way to start is with products formulated for it, such as Wood Sage & Sea Salt and English Pear & Freesia. The Jo Malone colognes above are the clearest case of a range built to be combined, and the practical test for anything else is whether two fragrances you already own share a material, which costs nothing to check on your own wrist. An unscented base is sometimes recommended as a layering foundation. We do not stock one — not a single listing in the catalogue is an unscented or fragrance-free base — so if that is the route you want to try, it will have to come from somewhere else.

    Can you layer three perfumes?

    You can, but research found people can hardly identify more than three odorants in a mixture, and each finished perfume already contains dozens of materials.     Which perfumes layer well together?

    Pairs with a large shared region and one clear axis of difference. Vanilla, amber and clean musk work under almost anything because they add weight low down without claiming the opening.     Perfume Concentration Chart: Parfum, EDP, EDT, EDC and Oil

    Perfume concentration describes how much fragrance compound is dissolved in the alcohol base. Parfum is the strongest, then eau de parfum, then eau de toilette, then eau de cologne. No regulator defines these terms or their percentages. The familiar figures – parfum 20 to 30 percent, EDP 15 to 20 – are industry convention, and each brand sets its own.

    That last point changes how you should read every chart you have seen, including the one below.

    What does perfume concentration actually measure?

    A finished fine fragrance is mostly solvent. The scented part is a single blended material that perfumers call the compound, the concentrate, or the juice: dozens to hundreds of individual aroma materials, a few natural extracts, most of them synthetic. That compound is dissolved in ethanol, usually with some water and a few functional additives such as UV filters.

    Concentration is the proportion of that compound in the finished liquid, by weight. An 18 percent eau de parfum is 18 parts compound to 82 parts everything else.

    Two consequences follow, and both are routinely missed. First, concentration says nothing about what is in the compound. Two bottles at an identical 18 percent can hold entirely different materials with entirely different volatilities and detection thresholds. It measures quantity, not character or staying power.

    Second, the alcohol in a US fine fragrance is denatured. Under 27 CFR Part 21, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau authorises specific specially denatured alcohol formulas — 38-B, 39-B, 39-C and 40 among them — for the use codes “121. Perfumes and perfume tinctures” and “122. Toilet waters and colognes.” The only division US federal alcohol regulation draws here is a two-way split between perfumes and toilet waters, and it attaches no percentage to either.

    Do parfum, EDP and EDT have legal definitions?

    No. Not in the United States, not in the European Union, and not in any standard published by the industry’s own trade bodies. This is the most important fact in the subject, so here is the evidence rather than the assertion.

    What US law requires

    Cosmetic labelling in the United States is governed by 21 CFR Part 701 and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. Those rules require a statement of identity, a net quantity of contents declaration, an ingredient declaration in descending order of predominance, and the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer or distributor. Fragrance may be declared generically as “fragrance.” Nothing in Part 701 defines eau de parfum, eau de toilette or cologne, and nothing requires a concentration figure anywhere on the package.

    What EU law requires

    Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, Article 19(1), lists the required labelling particulars: responsible person, nominal content by weight or volume, date of minimum durability, precautions, batch number, product function, and the ingredient list. Article 19(1)(g) then says that “Perfume and aromatic compositions and their raw materials shall be referred to by the terms ‘parfum’ or ‘aroma’.” The word parfum in an EU ingredient list is the name of the whole fragrance mixture as an ingredient. It is not a concentration class, and the Regulation defines none anywhere.

    What the industry’s own guidance says

    Cosmetics Europe, the European industry’s trade association, published labelling guidelines that treat these words as vocabulary rather than specification. The guidance notes only that “some terms used on labels are internationally accepted (e.g. ‘eyeliner’, eau de toilette, etc.).” Internationally accepted is not the same as defined.

    The International Fragrance Association is more revealing still. IFRA Standards restrict individual materials, not overall concentration: those that impose a quantitative limit “are expressed as a Maximum Acceptable Concentration (MAC) of fragrance ingredients in the finished consumer product, not in the fragrance mixture.” IFRA also sorts products into exposure categories, and in the current 51st Amendment guidance Category 4 is headed “Products related to fine fragrance,” with the exposure driver given as “Fine fragrance (eau de toilette, parfum etc.)” — one category, covering both. The earlier 49th Amendment categorisation was blunter still, listing “Hydroalcoholic and non-hydroalcoholic fine fragrance of all types (Eau de Toilette, Parfum, Cologne, solid perfume, fragrancing cream, aftershaves of all types, etc.)” as a single entry. The body that writes the industry’s safety limits does not treat EDT and parfum as different classes of product.

    So where do the percentage charts come from?

    From custom, repeated until it hardened. The ranges circulate widely and are attributed to no one.

    The closest traceable published figures sit in the safety-assessment literature. Cadby, Troy and Vey’s 2002 paper on consumer exposure to fragrance ingredients, in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, gives typical fragrance levels by product type from COLIPA and RIFM data. It lists two relevant entries: perfume extracts at 20 percent, toilet waters at 8 percent. Two categories, not five.

    The engineering literature does not supply the missing table either. The 2021 review “Perfume and Flavor Engineering: A Chemical Engineering Perspective” in Molecules covers composition, evaporation and performance modelling in detail and contains no table of EDT or EDP concentration ranges. Neither does Perfume Engineering: Design, Performance and Classification, by the same group. Those numbers are absent because they are not technical facts.

    Before any chart, see how lopsided the real market is. Across the 3,832 bottles we currently stock, eau de parfum and eau de toilette together account for close to four fifths of everything. Eau de cologne accounts for about 276, parfum or extrait for about 171, oils and attars around 26, and three listings say eau fraîche. Another 286, roughly 7%, carry no concentration word at all. Two rungs carry nearly all the traffic, and a real minority of bottles do not say which rung they are on. These are counts parsed from listing titles, not a concentration field.

    What figures can actually be sourced?

    A short table, because the honest list is short. Every figure in it comes from Cadby, Troy & Vey (2002) in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, citing COLIPA (1987) and RIFM (1996): exposure-assessment estimates used for safety modelling, not product definitions.

    How does concentration relate to longevity and projection?

    It contributes to both, and it determines neither.

    The usable physical model comes from perfume engineering, where the perceived intensity of a material is its odour value: its concentration in the air divided by its odour detection threshold. Gas-phase concentration depends on how much is in the liquid, its vapour pressure, and how it interacts with everything else. Intensity therefore rises with amount, rises with volatility, and falls with the threshold at which a nose can detect it.

    That structure explains why concentration alone is a weak predictor. Raising the compound loading raises every term proportionally, so a more concentrated version of the same compound will, all else equal, smell stronger and last somewhat longer. But detection thresholds differ between materials by orders of magnitude, not percentages: published compilations report vanillin as low as 0.00000016 ppm against ammonia from 0.043 ppm and benzene from 0.47 ppm. A material detectable at a millionth of another’s concentration contributes out of all proportion to its weight.

    The four performance words used inside the industry separate what consumer vocabulary runs together: impact is the immediate sensation, tenacity is persistence near the source, diffusion is how well the scent works at a distance, and volume is effectiveness across both time and distance. Concentration is one input to all four and the controlling input to none. Those are the trade names for what consumers call sillage, projection and longevity.

    Why can an EDT of one fragrance outlast an EDP of another?

    Because the two variables that matter most are independent of concentration.

    The first is composition. Longevity is a property of the least volatile materials in the blend: a compound built on sandalwood, synthetic musks and amber materials keeps producing detectable vapour long after one built on bergamot, lemon and light florals has gone. Published descriptions put top materials at 15 to 30 minutes on skin, heart materials at 3 to 4 hours, base materials beyond 4 hours. The arithmetic, illustrative only: a 10 percent compound that is 40 percent base materials carries 4 percent base material in the bottle, while a 20 percent compound that is 10 percent base materials carries 2 percent. The weaker-sounding bottle has twice the material that determines hour eight.

    The second is the version, not the class. When a brand makes an EDP and an EDT of the same name, the two are frequently not one compound diluted differently. Brands reweight the blend — often making the EDT fresher and more citrus-forward, the EDP warmer and more resinous — because simply diluting a warm composition gives a thin, unbalanced result. Once the compounds differ, the concentration ratio tells you very little.

    Where does perfume oil fit on the chart?

    Awkwardly, which is why most charts handle it badly.

    An alcohol-based fragrance releases scent in two phases: the ethanol flashes off in the first minutes, carrying a burst of the more volatile materials with it, then the remaining materials evaporate from the skin at their own rates. An oil-based fragrance has no ethanol and so no burst. The compound sits in a carrier — fractionated coconut oil, jojoba, or a synthetic dilutant — and releases slowly from the start.

    The practical consequences are consistent. Oils read quieter at arm’s length, sit closer to the skin, and often stay detectable to the wearer longer, because they are held on the skin rather than lost to the air. Percentages quoted for oils are not comparable to those for sprays: comparing “30 percent oil” to “30 percent extrait” is a category error. Oils suit skin sensitivity, and are the wrong tool if you want a fragrance that carries across a room.

    How do you read a bottle when the label will not tell you the percentage?

    You cannot extract the number. You can extract most of what it would have told you. Work in this order.

    1. Read the concentration word only as a within-brand ranking. If a house sells both an EDT and an EDP of one name, the EDP almost certainly carries more compound. Across two different houses, the words are not comparable and should not be compared.
    2. Ignore Elixir, Intense, Extrême, Absolu and Le Parfum as concentration signals. These are flanker names. They indicate a different composition, not a measured step up.
    3. Look at the note list for base-heavy material families. Oud, labdanum, benzoin, tonka, vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood, cashmeran, ambroxan and musks are low-volatility, and a list dominated by them predicts long wear better than the concentration word does. Citrus, aldehydes, mint and light green notes predict the opposite. Reading the base tier is the more useful skill.
    4. Check where fragrance sits in the ingredient list. On EU-compliant packaging ingredients run in descending order of weight, with anything under 1 percent in any order. A fine fragrance typically shows alcohol first and parfum second, water after. Whether parfum precedes or follows water is a hint about loading, never a measurement.
    5. Count the individually named fragrance allergens. EU rules require named disclosure of specified allergenic fragrance materials above 0.001 percent in leave-on products. A long allergen list is real disclosure rather than marketing copy, though it is not a concentration reading.
    6. Compare price per millilitre, not price. The step from EDT to EDP usually costs more per millilitre, and whether that is worth it depends on which version you prefer.
    7. Decide on wear, not on the chart. Judge the actual bottle over a full day on your own skin. There is a way to do that without wasting money.

    Which concentration myths are wrong, and what do people wrongly conclude?

    Myth: EDP is defined as 15 to 20 percent oil

    The claim: a fixed percentage band defines each category.
    What the evidence shows: no percentage appears in 21 CFR Part 701, Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, IFRA Standards or Cosmetics Europe’s labelling guidance. Butylphenyl methylpropional, long used in lily-of-the-valley and clean-laundry accords, was added to the EU’s prohibited list as entry 1666 of Annex II and has been banned in EU cosmetics since 1 March 2022. Removing a material and rebalancing around it changes performance without changing the concentration word on the box.

    No retailer, reviewer or consumer can verify a fragrance’s compound percentage: it needs analytical work on the finished liquid against a reference, and brands treat the compound as a trade secret. Everything in the conventional chart is therefore convention rather than fact, and the two figures carrying a citation — 20 percent for extracts, 8 percent for toilet waters — are exposure-modelling estimates from the 1980s and 1990s, not measurements of any current product. The note-tier timings are general descriptions from the engineering literature, not guarantees for any bottle: a 2025 study reports that evaporation profiles depend on skin properties as well as on the molecules. Treat concentration as one weak signal among several, and weight your own wear test above it.

    Buying by concentration without overpaying for the word

    If you already know a fragrance and want it to last longer, buying the EDP of that exact name is reasonable, because within one house the ranking usually holds. If you are buying blind, the concentration word is one of the least informative things on the box and price per millilitre one of the most. Sealed retail, tester and unboxed units of the same fragrance at the same concentration are the same liquid: the packaging changes, the strength does not.

    What our own catalogue shows

    Here is the price question answered properly, because the obvious answer misleads. Across our whole catalogue the median eau de parfum works out to about $0.88 per ml and the median eau de toilette about $0.59 — a gap of roughly 49%. That figure is near-useless for a buying decision: the two shelves hold different fragrances from different brands at different price levels, so it mostly tells you that expensive brands favour eau de parfum. The like-for-like comparison answers the actual question. Across the 73 fragrances we stock in both concentrations, the eau de parfum costs a median of about 13% more per millilitre than the eau de toilette of the same name. Thirteen percent, not fifty.

    Full concentration ladders are rarer than the marketing implies. Only five fragrances in our catalogue are stocked in three or more concentrations under one name: Versace Eros, Armaf Club de Nuit, Dior Homme, Azzaro Most Wanted and Worth Je Reviens. For nearly everything else the choice is one concentration in two or three sizes.

    Bottles to try this on

    Within-brand laddering is clearest when you can put two bottles side by side: Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette against Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum, and, if you can get both in front of you, Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette against Bleu de Chanel Parfum.     Almost everything that goes wrong with fragrance testing comes from smelling too many things too quickly and deciding too early. The physiology behind both errors is well documented, and working around it is mostly a matter of patience rather than technique.

    Should you test on a paper strip or on skin?

    Both, in that order, for different purposes.

    A paper blotter gives you a clean reading of the composition itself. Nothing is absorbing into it, nothing is warming it beyond room temperature, and nothing is adding to it. That makes it excellent for screening — deciding quickly whether a fragrance is worth spending a skin slot on — and reasonable for following the general shape of the composition over an hour.

    What a blotter cannot do is predict how the fragrance will behave on you. Skin is warm, it is variable, and it interacts with what you put on it. A 2025 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, “Exploring the impact of fragrance molecular and skin properties on the evaporation profile of fragrances,” reports that both the intrinsic molecular properties of the fragrance and the properties of the individual’s skin shape how fast materials leave, with the pattern differing between people. Only its title and abstract were reachable. Vapour pressure also rises with temperature, so skin at body heat drives evaporation faster than paper at room temperature.

    How many fragrances can you test in one session?

    Fewer than you want to. Three or four on skin, and not many more than that on paper.

    The constraint is physiological, and sensory-science practice acknowledges it directly. ISO 6658:2017, the international standard on sensory analysis methodology, states in clause 4.3: “Because of sensory fatigue and the effects of adaptation, only a limited number of samples can be assessed during a session, depending on the nature of the test and the type of product.” Professional panels are built around that limit. Retail customers routinely ignore it.

    Two distinct effects are at work.

    Self-adaptation. Sensitivity to an odour you are continuously smelling declines rapidly. Reviewing the psychophysical literature, Cometto-Muñiz and Cain report that at suprathreshold levels perceived intensity declines exponentially, approaching an asymptote in the vicinity of 30 to 40 percent of initial perceived magnitude by about four minutes. Four minutes of sniffing the same wrist leaves you smelling roughly a third of what you started with.

    Cross-adaptation. Exposure to one odorant also reduces sensitivity to others. The same review notes that cross-adaptation is generally weaker than self-adaptation, and that most cross-adaptational relationships are non-reciprocal — one substance affects sensitivity to a second more than the second affects sensitivity to the first. So the order in which you smell things changes what you perceive, asymmetrically, in ways you cannot predict. This is why the fifth fragrance of a session is not a fair test of the fifth fragrance.

    Recovery is not instant either. The same literature describes recovery of sensitivity as fast at first and slower afterwards, and notes that after adaptation following strong stimulation, full recovery may take hours.

    What actually resets your nose, and what does not?

    Time away from the odour resets it. Nothing else has been shown to.

    The coffee bean claim, and what the research found

    The practice is close to universal at fragrance counters. It has been tested, and the test did not support it.

    Grosofsky, Haupert and Versteeg published “An Exploratory Investigation of Coffee and Lemon Scents and Odor Identification” in Perceptual and Motor Skills in 2011. The paper opens by stating the premise plainly: “Fragrance sellers often provide coffee beans to their customers as a ‘nasal palate cleanser,’ to reduce the effects of olfactory adaptation and habituation.” College students smelled fragrances across nine trials, were then assigned to sniff coffee beans, lemon slices or plain air, and then had to identify which fragrance they had not previously encountered.

    The finding, in the authors’ own words, was that “coffee beans did not yield better performance than lemon slices or air.”

    Two things follow. First, the study is small and its authors titled it exploratory, so it is not the last word on anything. Second, it is nonetheless the only published direct test of the practice, and it found no benefit. Per-condition accuracy figures for this study circulate in secondary write-ups; they do not appear in the abstract, the full text is paywalled, and they are therefore not quoted here. For the same reason this article makes no claim that lemon performed better: the published conclusion separates coffee from neither lemon nor plain air.

    There is an additional irony worth noting. ISO 6658, the sensory-analysis standard, advises the opposite of the counter practice: “If it is possible, assessors should be asked to refrain from smoking and from consuming snacks such as coffee for 1 h before a test.” The discipline that tests smells professionally treats coffee as something to avoid beforehand, not as a tool to use during.

    How long should you wait before judging a fragrance?

    Longer than the shop encourages, and longer than feels necessary.

    Published descriptions of note structure place the most volatile materials at roughly 15 to 30 minutes on skin, the heart materials at around 3 to 4 hours, and the base materials beyond 4 hours. A decision made in the first ten minutes is a decision about the smallest and least durable part of the composition.

    One warning about judging your own fragrance late in the day: you will underestimate it. Repeated or prolonged exposure to an odorant produces a stimulus-specific decrease in sensitivity that recovers only after exposure stops. In one study, subjects exposed to an odorant continuously in their homes for two weeks had elevated detection thresholds, and for most of them reduced sensitivity was still evident up to two weeks after the last exposure. Get a second opinion before concluding a fragrance has vanished. This is also why longevity and projection get confused so often.

    How do you test when you are buying online?

    You cannot smell it first. That is a real constraint and it is worth naming rather than talking around. What there is instead is a set of moves that reduce the size of the mistake if you get it wrong.

    1. Smell it somewhere physical first if you possibly can. A department-store counter, an airport duty-free, a friend’s bottle. Testing in person and then buying online is the strongest position available.
    2. Buy the smallest size the brand makes. A 30 ml costs more per millilitre than a 100 ml, and that premium is far cheaper than a large bottle you never finish. The per-millilitre arithmetic is worth knowing before you decide.
    3. Buy a manufacturer travel spray or miniature where one exists. It is factory-filled with the same liquid and gives you a genuine wear test.
    4. Read the base notes, not the top notes. The base predicts what you will wear for most of the day. Match it against fragrances you already know you like. If you are not sure how to read one, start with what the three tiers actually mean.
    5. Check the ingredient list for named fragrance allergens if you have ever reacted to a fragrance. On EU-compliant packaging, specified allergens are named individually above 0.001 percent in leave-on products, and that list has been expanded from 24 to 80 substances. It is the only genuine composition disclosure available to you.
    6. Buy the concentration you tested, not a different one. Brands frequently reweight rather than simply dilute between an EDT and an EDP, so they are not always the same scent at two volumes. The concentration chart explains why.
    7. Read the return terms before ordering, not after. Fragrance return policies vary widely between retailers, and almost all of them treat a wrong, damaged or misdescribed item differently from a change of mind. Find the policy that applies to your order, read it before you pay, and plan on the assumption that a change-of-mind return will cost you something.
    8. Check the condition stated on the listing. Most of our stock is sealed retail; some units are marked as testers and some as unboxed. The liquid is the same; the packaging is not. Tester units are the clearest case of that.

    The testing procedure

    1. Go with a plan and a limit. Decide in advance on a maximum of three or four fragrances. Write the names down before you start, because you will not remember them accurately afterwards.
    2. Wear no fragrance, and use unscented products that morning. Scented lotion or aftershave on your wrists contaminates every reading.
    3. Screen on paper first. Spray each candidate on a separate labelled blotter, hold it a few inches away, and take one or two short sniffs. Reject anything you clearly dislike here and save the skin slots.
    4. Limit yourself to short sniffs. Do not linger over a blotter. Perceived intensity is down to roughly a third within about four minutes of continuous exposure, so long sniffing makes you less able to judge, not more.
    5. Move survivors to skin, one per site. Both wrists and both inner forearms give four sites. Label them — a pen mark on the skin or a note on your phone — because you will mix them up.
    6. Leave the store. This is the single most valuable step. Get away from the ambient scent of a fragrance department and go do something else.
    7. Check at 30 minutes, 2 hours and 6 hours. Short sniffs. Write one sentence each time. The 6-hour reading is the one that should decide the purchase.
    8. Ask another person at the 2-hour mark. Ask specifically whether they can smell it from where they are, and what it reminds them of. You cannot assess your own projection.
    9. Do not buy the same day. Sleep on it and check your notes in the morning. If you still want it, the decision is a real one.
    10. Repeat once before buying a large bottle. A second wearing on a different day filters out temperature, mood and a bad nose day.

    The honest limits of this article

    The coffee-bean finding rests on a single small study of college students, which its own authors titled exploratory. It is the only published direct test of the practice we could locate, and the honest statement is that the practice is unsupported rather than disproven. Its per-condition accuracy figures are not quoted anywhere in this article because the full text is paywalled and they do not appear in the abstract. The four-minute figure for intensity decline and the description of recovery as fast-then-slow come from a review of psychophysical research and describe general olfactory behaviour, not behaviour with any specific fragrance. Note-tier timings of 15 to 30 minutes, 3 to 4 hours and beyond 4 hours are general descriptions of material classes from the engineering literature, not measurements. Individual variation is large: skin properties, olfactory sensitivity, specific anosmia to particular materials, and day-to-day nasal condition all affect what you perceive. We have not tested or smelled any product, and nothing in this article is a claim about how a specific fragrance behaves. The procedure above is built to reduce error, not to eliminate it.

    What good testing actually buys you

    It does not guarantee you will love the bottle. It converts a coin flip into an informed decision, and it moves the decision from the phase of the fragrance that lasts twenty minutes to the phase that lasts all day. For anyone buying without smelling first, the useful version is shorter still: buy small, read the base, wear it for a full day before buying a second bottle, and treat the first purchase of any fragrance as the test rather than the commitment.

    What our own catalogue shows

    Small formats are more available than people assume and less available than they need to be. Of the 3,832 bottles we currently list, about 382 come in 30 ml (1 oz) or smaller, covering around 347 distinct fragrances — and only about 85 of those are also stocked here in a 100 ml (3.4 oz) bottle. In other words, the small bottle on the shelf is usually some other fragrance’s small bottle, not the trial size of the big one you are weighing up. If the fragrance you want has no small format, that is the moment to find a wear test some other way rather than to guess.

    Miniatures and travel sprays are a narrower slice still: roughly 200 listings, about 5% of what we stock, come in under 20 ml. They are worth hunting for before you commit to a full bottle, but the odds are against any particular fragrance having one. Note too that this count includes small bottles that arrive small from the supplier feed rather than a formal travel-spray line — the catalogue records size, not marketing category.

    Bottles to try this on

    Small formats make this affordable. A small bottle of a well-known composition — Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum, say, or the 1 oz Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette — is a far better first purchase than a 100 ml of something you have never worn for a full day. Where a manufacturer travel spray exists, as with the 1 oz (30 ml) YSL Libre, it serves the same purpose. And if you already know a fragrance well and simply want more of it, the large format is where the per-millilitre arithmetic favours you: the 6.8 oz (200 ml) Versace Eros is the kind of purchase that should follow a wear test, not precede one.

    A standard fragrance atomizer releases about 0.1 ml per spray, so a 30 ml bottle holds roughly 300 sprays, a 50 ml bottle about 500, and a 100 ml bottle about 1,000. Pump output ranges from 0.07 to 0.14 ml, so the real figure for a 100 ml bottle sits somewhere between about 700 and 1,400 sprays.

    That is the whole calculation: bottle volume divided by the dose your pump delivers. Everything after this is working out which dose you actually have, how fast you get through it, and how much the answer moves when the assumptions change.

    How much perfume comes out in one spray?

    Fragrance pumps are engineered components with published specifications, so this is not guesswork. Aptar is one of the largest suppliers of fragrance pumps to the industry, and it lists output per stroke on its product pages:

    A microliter is a thousandth of a milliliter. Across these four product lines the working range is 0.07 ml to 0.14 ml per spray, and 0.10 ml appears in every single one. That is where the familiar “0.1 ml per spray” figure comes from. It is the industry’s most common option, not a universal constant.

    The spread matters more than it looks. A 0.14 ml pump empties a bottle twice as fast as a 0.07 ml pump at the same number of presses. Two people can own the same fragrance, spray the same number of times, and get genuinely different bottle lifespans without either doing anything unusual.

    Why can’t you just look up your pump?

    Brands do not print pump output on the box, on the bottle, or in product copy. The pump is a sourced component chosen for spray character and for how it fits the bottle’s neck, and the same fragrance can ship with different pumps across sizes, production runs and markets.

    Output is also only one of the variables a brand selects. Aptar’s specifications list an insert angle alongside the dosage, quoted at values such as 50, 60 and 70 degrees, and describe designs intended to give a wider diffusion of the formula. A pump tuned for a broad, fine mist covers more skin per spray than one that delivers a tighter stream, even at identical volume. Perceived strength per press and volume per press are not the same thing.

    The shortcut worth memorizing: at 0.1 ml per spray, sprays equal milliliters times ten. A 100 ml bottle is a thousand sprays. A 10 ml travel atomizer is a hundred.

    How many sprays does the average person actually use?

    There is real data here, and it comes from an unlikely place. Regulators assessing the safety of cosmetic ingredients need to know how much product people apply, because exposure is dose multiplied by frequency. So they survey it.

    The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, reviewing use amounts for hydroalcoholic fragrance sprays, cites an arithmetic mean of 280 mg per application and a 95th percentile of 618 mg per application.

    Those are masses, not volumes, so converting them takes one assumption. Ethanol has a density of about 0.79 g/ml, and an alcoholic fragrance is mostly ethanol with water and a small proportion of aroma materials, which puts a plausible working density somewhere near 0.85 g/ml. That conversion is my arithmetic and the density is an estimate, not a measured value for any particular formula, so the table below shows how the answer moves across the plausible range.

    The conclusion is stable no matter which density you pick: a typical application is around three sprays, and a heavy one is around seven. That is a useful sanity check on the usual advice to wear two to four sprays. The advice matches the survey data.

    A separate industry exposure assessment, by Cadby, Troy and Vey, used a higher figure of 0.75 g per application for toilet waters, applied once daily, which at the same conversion would be closer to nine sprays. Safety assessments deliberately select conservative high-end inputs, because underestimating exposure is the dangerous error. Read 0.75 g as a protective upper bound rather than as a description of normal behavior.

    How long will a bottle last?

    Sprays per bottle divided by sprays per day gives days of use. This table does it at 0.1 ml per spray and converts to months of roughly 30.4 days.

    Two things fall out of this. First, a 100 ml bottle worn every single day at a normal dose lasts roughly a year, not the several years people tend to assume. Second, almost nobody wears one fragrance daily. Four bottles in rotation stretch each one to about four times these figures, which pushes a 100 ml bottle past three years. At that point how you store it starts to matter more than how large it is, because the bottle now has to survive years rather than months.

    How much does your own pump change the answer?

    A great deal, and this is the part most spray-count articles skip. The table below takes one bottle size, 100 ml, and works the same calculation at each end of the pump range alongside the middle.

    Designer, niche, indie and clone describe where a fragrance sits in the market, not how well it is made. Designer means a fashion or lifestyle brand selling at scale, usually under licence. Niche means limited distribution and higher prices. Indie means independent ownership. Clone means a fragrance openly built on another’s profile, which is lawful where no trademark is copied.

    These four words carry more weight in fragrance discussion than any others, and none of them has a legal or technical definition. They are positions, and they are chosen. A brand can move between them without changing a molecule.

    What does “designer fragrance” actually mean?

    It means a fragrance sold under the name of a fashion, jewelry or lifestyle brand, in wide distribution, at a price point supported by advertising. The critical and largely invisible detail is that the fashion house usually does not run the fragrance business itself. It licenses the name.

    Coty holds prestige fragrance licences for Burberry, Calvin Klein, Chloé, Davidoff, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Marc Jacobs and Tiffany & Co. Inter Parfums holds them for Montblanc, Jimmy Choo, Coach, Lacoste, Van Cleef & Arpels, Guess and Ferragamo. Euroitalia has held Versace since 2005 and Moschino since 1988. L’Oréal has held the Giorgio Armani beauty licence since 1988 and renewed it in 2018 through to 2050.

    Licensing has a measurable cost, and one of the licensees is a public company that discloses it. In the first quarter of 2025, Inter Parfums recorded royalties of $28.1 million on net sales of $338.8 million, about 8.3% of sales, on top of advertising and promotion at 15.2% of sales. Its licences are, in its own words, “subject to certain minimum advertising expenditures and royalty payments as are customary in our industry.” Gross margin was 63.7%.

    That is the structural reality behind designer pricing: a royalty to the name, a contractual advertising minimum, department-store margin, and a concentrate budget that has to fit under all of it.

    What does “niche” actually mean, and who owns the niche brands?

    Niche originally described brands that sold through few doors, made small batches, avoided mass advertising and put the fragrance rather than a celebrity at the center of the story. That description still fits some brands. It no longer describes the category, because the category was bought.

    A note on Creed’s founding date. Creed markets a 1760 founding. Everything known about the company before about 1970 comes from Creed itself, and the fullest published challenge is Gabe Oppenheim’s book The Ghost Perfumer, which reports that none of the antique bottles, bills of sale, letters or perfumery equipment that survive for comparably old houses have been found for Creed. This article does not put a date on the company’s real beginning, because the registry records that would settle it could not be inspected.

    Estée Lauder’s own rationale, as reported at the time of the Kilian deal, was that niche fragrance was taking share from mass players and growing at double digits. The acquisitions worked. The label did not change.

    So when you buy Baccarat Rouge 540 or Byredo Gypsy Water, you are buying from LVMH and Puig respectively. That is not a criticism of either fragrance. It is a correction to the idea that niche means small.

    What counts as indie, and how big is it?

    Indie is the honest version of what niche used to mean: independently owned, not part of a beauty conglomerate, usually founder-run, usually distributed through a small number of accounts or direct to consumer. Ownership is the test, and it is the one test in this article that has a clear yes-or-no answer.

    The segment is not marginal, but it is also not reliably sized in public. Share figures for independent brands circulate in trade reporting, attributed to market-research providers whose underlying releases are not public, and different providers define “indie” differently, so this article gives no number. What can be checked is ownership, one brand at a time. An indie brand still buys its concentrate from the same suppliers everyone else uses, or from a smaller compounder, and still fills at a third-party filler.

    Indie is also the least stable label here, because success converts it. Byredo and Maison Francis Kurkdjian were both indie for over a decade before they were not.

    What is a clone, dupe or “inspired by” fragrance, and is it legal?

    This is where accuracy matters most, because two completely different things get called the same name.

    A counterfeit copies a brand’s trademark, bottle and packaging and sells the product as if it were that brand. It is illegal in every major market, and it is fraud against the buyer.

    An inspired-by fragrance, sometimes called a clone or dupe, is sold under its own name and trademark, with its own packaging, and does not pretend to be another brand. It is composed to resemble another fragrance’s smell. In the United States, that is lawful, and the reason is unusually clear. The USPTO’s own trademark manual states that “scents that serve a utilitarian purpose, such as the scent of perfume or an air freshener, are functional and not registrable.” A scent can be a trademark for products where it is incidental, which is why a plumeria scent was registrable for sewing thread in In re Clarke. It cannot be a trademark for perfume, because in perfume the scent is the product. Add the courts’ refusal to extend copyright to fragrances, and a perfume’s smell is simply not owned.

    What is owned is everything around it. In Europe, the Court of Justice held on 18 June 2009 in L’Oréal v Bellure (Case C-487/07) that “smell-alike” comparison lists naming the original brands amounted to comparative advertising and could be restrained by the trademark owner, and that presenting goods as imitations was unlawful. The fragrances themselves were not the infringement; the lists were. US law treats comparative reference more permissively, which is why side-by-side reference lists are more visible in the American market than the European one.

    Analytical chemistry makes the practice trivially easy. As one legal review of the industry puts it, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry means “one can learn with remarkable accuracy the formula of any fragrance,” and a smell-alike industry grew directly out of that capability.

    The practical point for a buyer: a legitimately sold inspired-by fragrance is a different product with a similar smell, and it should be judged as one. A counterfeit is a different thing entirely and carries real risks.

    The row that does most of the work is the last-but-one. Nobody publishes their raw-material budget. Every claim that niche uses “better ingredients” and designer uses “cheap synthetics” rests on an unpublished number. What is publishable, and published, is that both buy from the same seven suppliers.

    The row that does the second most work is the royalty row. A licensed designer fragrance carries a cost that an owned brand does not, and that cost has nothing to do with the liquid.

    Why is “niche” a market position rather than a quality tier?

    Because the supply chain is shared. In the 2026 Fragrance Foundation awards alone, Dominique Ropion of IFF was credited on a Tom Ford ultra-luxury launch, a Miu Miu prestige launch and the Hall of Fame entry for Frédéric Malle’s Portrait of a Lady. Across the 2025 and 2026 cycles, Jérôme Epinette of Robertet was credited on both a Byredo fragrance and a Rare Beauty fragrance, and Marie Salamagne of dsm-firmenich on a Ralph Lauren men’s prestige launch and an Yves Saint Laurent Le Vestiaire exclusive.

    There is no separate laboratory for niche. There is no separate perfumer roster. There is a different brief, a different budget, a different bottle and a different number of doors.

    That said, the position does change the product in ways you can smell. Niche briefs are more likely to permit an unbalanced, loud or difficult accord, because they do not need to survive a mall-wide focus group. Designer briefs are shaped by scale: a fragrance that will be sold in fifty thousand doors is optimized for broad acceptability. Indie briefs are shaped by the founder’s taste. Those are genuine differences in intent, and they are more informative than any claim about ingredient quality.

    Where do Middle Eastern houses sit on this map?

    Awkwardly, because they do not fit a Western taxonomy built around licensing. Most are family-owned manufacturers, not licensees. Rasasi was founded in Dubai in 1979 by Abdul Razzak Kalsekar and manufactures in Jebel Ali Free Zone. Swiss Arabian was founded in 1974 by Hussein Adam Ali and describes itself as the first perfume house in the UAE. Ajmal was founded in 1951 in Assam, India, and moved to the Gulf in the 1970s. These are vertically integrated businesses: they own the brand, run the factory and, in several cases, run their own retail.

    In category terms that makes them closer to indie than to designer, with the distribution scale of designer. Givaudan’s global head of fine fragrance has described the region’s brands as offering “affordable creations crafted by high-profile perfumers” and delivering quality at retail prices that “did not exist before.” Some of these houses build fragrances on familiar designer profiles and some do not; both practices coexist within single portfolios.     How to place any brand on this map in six steps

    1. Find the owner. Search the brand name with “acquired by” and “annual report.” Ownership is public for every listed conglomerate and settles the indie question outright.
    2. Find the operator. If it is a fashion name, find out who holds the beauty licence. Coty, Inter Parfums, Euroitalia, L’Oréal and Puig all publish their portfolios.
    3. Count the doors. Check where you can legitimately buy it. Two boutiques and one department store is a different business from every drugstore in the country.
    4. Check the concentration line-up. A brand that sells one extrait behaves differently from a brand that sells an EDT, an EDP, a Parfum and an Elixir of the same idea.
    5. Look for a named perfumer and supplier. The Fragrance Foundation Awards credit brand, supplier and perfumer together, which is the fastest way to see that a niche launch and a designer launch came from the same lab.
    6. Ignore the word on the marketing. If steps one to five all say conglomerate-owned, widely distributed and heavily advertised, the brand is not niche in any meaningful sense regardless of what the copy says.

    Myths worth correcting

    “Niche means small and independent.” Most of the best-known niche names are owned by Puig, Estée Lauder, LVMH or L’Oréal. Independence is a separate question with a separate answer.

    “Designer fragrances are made by the fashion house.” Usually not. They are made by a fragrance supplier and operated by a licensee. The fashion house collects a royalty and approves the result.

    “Clone brands are counterfeit.” No. A counterfeit copies a trademark and deceives the buyer. An inspired-by fragrance sold under its own trademark, without copying packaging, is a lawful product. Conflating the two is inaccurate and unfair to the companies involved.

    “Higher price means higher concentration.” Price and concentration are set independently. Plenty of expensive fragrances are eaux de toilette and plenty of inexpensive ones are eaux de parfum.

    “Niche fragrances use naturals; designer fragrances use synthetics.” Both use both, from the same suppliers. Naturals and synthetics are also not a quality hierarchy, which is a separate topic.

    “Indie means handmade.” Almost never. Independent brands typically brief a supplier or compounder and use a contract filler, exactly like a large brand, just at smaller volume.

    The honest limits of this article

    The economics here rest on one public licensee’s quarterly disclosure. Inter Parfums’ royalty rate of roughly 8.3% of net sales and advertising at 15.2% are real numbers for Inter Parfums in the first quarter of 2025; they are not an industry average, and rates vary by brand, term and territory. No brand in any category publishes its raw-material cost per kilo of concentrate, its batch sizes or its concentrate specification, so this article states the difference exists without quantifying it, and any source that quantifies it is estimating. Ownership details are accurate as of the sources cited, and fragrance licences change hands regularly: L’Oréal has the right to enter a fifty-year exclusive Gucci licence when Coty’s existing licence expires. Sorting brands by size tells you about distribution, not about how a fragrance was made.

They are the editorial categories this article has spent several thousand words arguing about, and assigning 466 brands to them would be our judgement dressed up as a measurement. Across categories this loose, the honest answer is that price tracks distribution strategy and brand positioning, and there is no clean number to hang on it.

    A batch code is a short alphanumeric lot identifier the manufacturer prints or etches on a bottle and its carton. It identifies the production run, which usually implies an approximate production date. It is not an expiration date, not a serial number and not proof of authenticity. Formats are set by each company, so no universal decoder exists.

    What is a batch code, and where is it printed?

    A batch code, also called a lot code, marks the production run a unit came from. On fragrance it is normally printed in small type or laser-etched near the base of the bottle, on the underside, or around the collar, and repeated on the carton, usually on a bottom panel or an end flap. It is short, commonly three to eight characters, and it usually looks nothing like a date.

    The reason it exists is traceability. If a manufacturer identifies a problem with one production run, batch codes let it withdraw that run rather than everything it has ever made. Compliance guidance describes exactly this scenario: a contamination issue affecting a single production run can be handled with a targeted recall instead of a mass one, provided the units can be identified. That is a manufacturing control, not a consumer feature, which explains why it is printed so discreetly and why brands publish no key to it.

    Two consequences follow immediately, and most misunderstanding about batch codes comes from missing them. First, the code was never designed for you, so it owes you nothing in terms of readability. Second, it identifies a batch, not a bottle. Every unit filled in that run carries the same code, which is why a batch code cannot function as a serial number.

    Is a batch code required by law?

    It depends entirely on the market, and the US and EU answers are close to opposite.

    In the European Union, Regulation 1223/2009 requires every cosmetic product to bear “the batch number of manufacture or the reference for identifying the cosmetic product,” with an allowance for products too small to carry it, where the information need appear only on the packaging. The same article requires a date of minimum durability, defined as the date until which the product stored under appropriate conditions will continue to fulfil its initial function, and requires that where minimum durability exceeds 30 months the label instead carry an indication of the period after opening for which the product is safe to use, shown with the open-jar symbol followed by a period in months or years.

    In the United States there is no equivalent requirement. FDA’s summary of cosmetic labeling requirements covers product identity, net quantity, the responsible firm’s name and address, the ingredient declaration and country of origin. Batch numbers, lot codes and expiration dates are not on the list.

    This is why a US-market bottle can legitimately carry no date information of any kind, while the same fragrance bought in Europe carries a batch number and possibly a durability indication. The absence of a printed date on a US bottle tells you nothing about whether it is genuine. It is also why parallel-import stock sometimes carries markings a US-market bottle does not; the unit was labelled for a different regulatory regime.

    What does a batch code actually tell you?

    At best, roughly when the unit was filled. Most large fragrance manufacturers encode a year and either a month, a week or a day-of-year value into the code, and third-party lookup sites have reverse-engineered many of those schemes by collecting codes from stock whose age is known. A working code typically resolves to a month and year, sometimes only to a year.

    What it does not give you is precision or meaning beyond that. A single batch can be filled across several days. The filling date is not the date the fragrance concentrate was compounded, which may be months earlier. Nothing in the code describes the conditions the bottle met afterwards, which is the variable that actually determines how it smells now.

    It is also worth knowing that the format is a business decision rather than a regulated one. Compliance guidance on EU batch numbering states plainly that the format is commonly decided by the company, and the regulation itself prescribes none. A brand can change its scheme when it changes packaging supplier, opens a new filling site, or moves production between contract manufacturers, and it has no obligation to tell anyone.

    How do you actually read a code, step by step?

    There is no universal key, so the method is elimination and corroboration rather than decoding. Work through it in this order.

    1. Record the code exactly. Copy every character including letters, digits and any spaces, and note the order. Photograph it rather than transcribing from memory, because 0 and O, 1 and I, and 5 and S are routinely confused at that type size.
    2. Note its shape. Count the characters and note the pattern, for example three characters, or a letter followed by four digits. The shape is what a lookup site matches against.
    3. Identify the manufacturer, not the brand. One fragrance manufacturer fills for many brand names under licence, and the coding scheme belongs to the filler. Selecting the wrong entity is the most common reason a lookup returns nonsense.
    4. Run it through a lookup site and record the result. Expect a month and year at best.
    5. Corroborate with a second, independent site. Accept the result only if both agree. If they disagree, you have learned that the format is ambiguous, which is itself useful.
    6. Sanity-check the answer against reality. A code that resolves to a date before the fragrance launched is wrong. A code that resolves to next year is wrong. A code that resolves to fifteen years ago on a bottle in current retail packaging is probably wrong, because packaging generations change.
    7. Compare bottle to carton. The two codes should match. This check does not depend on decoding anything and is the most reliable thing you can do with a batch code.
    8. Stop if nothing resolves. An unrecognised format is common and means only that the scheme is not in that site’s catalogue.

    Step six is the one people skip and the one that catches most errors. A decoder will happily return a confident date from a code it has misread, because it is applying a rule rather than checking a database. The launch-date test costs thirty seconds and invalidates a large share of wrong answers. One thing we cannot help with: we do not publish production dates, and nothing in our catalogue records them. The word “batch” does not appear in a single one of our listing descriptions. If the age of a particular bottle matters to you, the code on the unit itself is the only thing that will tell you, and you can only read it once the bottle is in your hand.

    Does a batch code tell you when a perfume expires?

    No, and on a US-market bottle there is usually nothing that does. FDA states plainly that there are no US laws or regulations requiring cosmetics to have specific shelf lives or expiration dates on their labels, and that determining a product’s shelf life is part of the manufacturer’s responsibility.

    Brands that discuss it publicly give ranges rather than dates. Creed’s guidance is that an opened fragrance lasts three to five years on average, that it is ideally used within two to three years, and that an unopened bottle stored properly lasts considerably longer because it has had no exposure to oxygen. Creed also describes what a turned fragrance smells like: sour, metallic or acidic, almost vinegary, with the liquid often darker or more opaque than when it was bought.

    Storage is the real clock. A peer-reviewed review of essential oil stability found compositional change proceeding considerably faster under illumination than in darkness, and notes that a temperature rise of 10 degrees Celsius approximately doubles chemical reaction rates. Commercial stability laboratories test fragrance against heat, light and freeze-thaw cycling, and accelerated aging protocols work by raising the temperature to simulate longer storage, which tells you how directly heat substitutes for time in this product category.

    There is a safety dimension as well as an aesthetic one. The European Commission’s scientific committee summary on fragrance allergies notes that oxidation products of common fragrance terpenes, including limonene, linalool, geraniol and linalyl acetate, have been identified as potent sensitizers in predictive animal tests, and that the oxidised forms give frequent allergic contact reactions in patch-tested dermatitis patients while the non-oxidised compounds rarely do. It also notes that air oxidation can be limited by handling and storage that avoids air exposure. A bottle kept in a hot, bright bathroom ages faster in every sense than one kept closed in a drawer.

    Useful, and not authoritative. They work by pattern matching. Someone has worked out that a given manufacturer writes the year in a particular position and the month in another, and the site applies that rule to whatever you type. When the rule fits, the answer is right. When a brand changes packaging supplier, moves production, or uses a filler whose scheme the site has not catalogued, the answer is wrong or simply absent.

    The failure mode that matters is that these tools rarely say “I do not know.” A rule-based decoder returns a date because that is what it does, and a confidently displayed month and year feels like a fact. Treat every result as an estimate with an error bar. Two independent checkers agreeing is meaningfully more persuasive than one. A checker returning nothing is common and means only that the format is unrecognised, not that the bottle is suspect.

The reseller’s stated motive was to stop Davidoff identifying which vendors were supplying it. The Eleventh Circuit held the altered bottles were materially different from what Davidoff sold, upheld a preliminary injunction, and noted that physical alterations making consumers think a product has been harmed or tampered with create actionable confusion. A footnote recorded Davidoff’s position that removing the code interfered with its quality control system.

    Read that as evidence about effort. Codes that have been scratched, solvent-wiped, stickered over or etched away did not lose themselves. Somebody spent time removing them, and the documented reason for doing so is to break traceability.

    What a batch code will never tell you

    It will not tell you whether the bottle is authentic, which is the job people most often try to give it and the one it cannot do.

    What a listing can tell you is the condition of the unit, and that is worth reading closely rather than skimming. Two or more together mean walk away.

    How common are counterfeit fragrances, really?

    Common enough to be a real risk, and concentrated in particular channels rather than spread evenly. Globally, the OECD and the EU Intellectual Property Office put trade in counterfeit goods at roughly USD 467 billion in 2021, about 2.3% of world imports. and USD 117 billion or 4.7% for the EU alone. A separate EUIPO study covering 2018 to 2021 put the cost to EU cosmetics and perfumery makers at about EUR 3 billion a year, roughly 4.8% of the sector, and about 32,000 jobs. That 4.8% is worth holding onto: it makes cosmetics one of the less damaged sectors EUIPO studied. This is a serious problem, not an epidemic that has swallowed the category.

    Two details make this check sharper than it looks. First, the responsible firm’s entry is not decorative: under MoCRA the label must identify the person whose name appears on the product for adverse-event purposes. A label with no traceable company behind it has been copied, not printed.

    Second, FDA distinguishes between containers in a way that matters. Statements required under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act must appear on the inside as well as any outside container or wrapper, while Fair Packaging and Labeling Act requirements apply only to the label of the outer container. In practice that means the ingredient declaration and net quantity are frequently printed on the carton alone.     These bands are a rule of thumb drawn from how the discount market behaves, not a measured statistic. Use them to prompt a question rather than to reach a verdict, and the question is always the same: what is it about this unit that makes it cheaper, and does the listing say so in words. The FBI also flags fakes advertised as “limited edition” when the manufacturer offers no such edition, which takes a minute to check. We are deliberately not naming the ten most-counterfeited fragrances or putting a price on them. Nobody publishes a reliable ranking, and a list assembled from bestseller charts and a hunch would be an invention dressed as data. The rule of thumb above does the same work without pretending to a precision it does not have.

    Where do counterfeit fragrances concentrate?

    The FBI names flea markets, mall kiosks, unauthorized online retailers and auction sites, and gives two drivers: the internet hands counterfeiters direct access to customers, and prosecuting sellers based outside the US is difficult, making it a relatively low-risk crime.

    4. Check where it ships from. A small parcel direct from overseas travels the channel most seizures come from.
    5. Read the listing for condition language: sealed retail, tester, unboxed. A listing that will not say is telling you something.
    6. Confirm the returns route before paying: a named process, a time window, and a way to reach a person.

The FTC advises sending a written billing-error notice so that it reaches the card issuer within 60 days after the first bill containing the charge was sent to you. The CFPB states the same 60-calendar-day window.
